Major in International Relations, Minors in Japanese and Gender & Women's Studies
Describe your internship.
As a non-profit organization, the Japan America Society of Colorado works to strengthen cooperation and build understanding between Colorado and Japan at a grassroots level. We provide programming in business, education, and culture. A few of our recent events included running a festival booth while participating in the Cherry Blossom Festival, and sponsoring a charity fundraiser for those affected by the recent earthquake in northern Japan.
We provide seminars on culture and Japanese business etiquette and language lessons as well as networking events. I help out during the aforementioned events and also work in the office, finding interesting information for our newsletter, talking to sponsors, and other miscellaneous office jobs.
How did Knox help you prepare for this opportunity?
I'm interested in continuing to develop my Japanese and working within my local community, and Knox has encouraged me to reach out and involve myself with related opportunities.
Working with the Japan America Society of Colorado has allowed me to build a better contact network within the larger Japanese community, which is sure to come into use in the future, since I'll be attending Waseda University in Tokyo this upcoming spring semester 2017.
How do you see this experience having an impact on your future plans?
Working with the Japan America Society allowed me to utilize my skills within the Japanese culture and language, facilitating both the linguistic and cultural aspects of communication. I also learned how to better arrange events, contact sponsors, connect to target populations, and work within an office environment.
