Knox Announces Faculty Promotions

Old Main at dusk

A traditional highlight of Knox’s June Board of Trustees meeting is the awarding of promotions and tenure to deserving faculty. As a result of recent retirements and expanding academic programs, this year’s crop of newly tenured and promoted professors is somewhat larger than usual—including five faculty members receiving tenure and six additional faculty members receiving promotions to full professor.

Faculty Awarded Tenure

Danielle Steen Fatkin, associate professor of history, joined the Knox faculty in 2008. Her teaching interests include Roman archaeology and history, Roman religions, and cultural heritage management. She is co-director of Knox’s new program in archaeology.

Andrea Ferrigno, associate professor of art, joined the Knox faculty in 2013. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in painting, drawing, and printmaking.

Nathalie Haurberg ’06, associate professor of physics, joined the Knox faculty in 2013 and has been instrumental in adding new coursework and a minor in astronomy.

Andrew Hertel, associate professor of psychology, joined the Knox faculty in 2013 and currently serves as chair of the College’s recently implemented health studies program. Along with assistant professor of psychology Sarah O’Brien, he is the recipient of a Mellon faculty career enhancement grant supporting research into substance use in parent-child duos.

Monica McGill, associate professor of computer science, joined the Knox faculty in 2017. Her teaching interests include game design and development, software development processes, and applications of new technologies, including games and virtual reality, to address existing problems. She was one of several faculty members who collaborated on CS 295R: Interactive Design.

Faculty Earning Promotions

The board also promoted six faculty members from associate to full professor.

David Bunde, computer science (who was also named the William & Mary Ingersoll Chair in Computer Science) joined the Knox faculty in 2006 and was promoted to associate professor in 2012.

Catherine Denial, history, joined the Knox faculty in 2005 and was awarded the Bright Professorship in History in 2016. She also currently serves as chair of the History Department.

Gina Franco, English, joined the Knox faculty in 2003 after earning a Ph.D. in Language and Literature from Cornell University and received tenure in 2009.

Andrew Leahy, mathematics, joined the Knox faculty in 1995 and currently serves as the chair of both the Mathematics Department and the Financial Mathematics Department. He also received the Philip Green Wright-Lombard College Prize for Distinguished Teaching in 2003.

Robin Ragan, modern languages (Spanish), joined the Knox faculty in 2000 and served several terms as resident advisor for both Knox in Barcelona and Knox in Buenos Aires. She is also a former director of the Stellyes Center for Global Studies.

Peter Schwartzman, environmental studies, joined the Knox faculty in 1998. In late 2018, he published The Earth is Not for Sale, co-written with his father, David Schwartzman.
