Knox College celebrates Black History Month with lectures, concerts and other public events. Featured events include a concert by jazz vocalist Semenya McCord and a performance tribute to Martin Luther King by Joe Rogers, former lieutenant governor of Colorado.

• Thursday, Feb. 3
Lecture: "Knox College and the Western Illinois Underground Railroad," by Owen Muelder, director of the Underground Railroad Freedom Center at Knox College. 7 p.m., Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union, Knox College. Free.

• Wednesday, Feb. 9
Lecture: "BCD's of Black Female & Black Male Relationships," by Fred Hord, professor of Black Studies at Knox College and founder of the Association for Black Culture Centers. 7 p.m. Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union. Knox College. Free.

• Thursday, Feb. 10
Open House:
Association for Black Culture Centers and Black Studies Department. 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. Second Floor, Memorial Gymnasium, Knox College. Free door prizes!

• Thursday, Feb. 17
Poetry Reading: ABLE Poetry Night. Readings by Knox College students and faculty. 7 p.m. Wallace Lounge, Seymour Union, Knox College. Free.

• Saturday, Feb. 19
Concert
: "A Love Supreme: The Spiritual Face of Jazz." Jazz vocalist Semenya McCord performs compositions of Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. 7 p.m. Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College. Tickets $5 at the door, free to all students with school ID.

• Monday, Feb. 21
Concert: "The Energy of the Drums." Live African drumming by Knox College students Quadir Bruce and Roberto Vargas. 7 p.m. Stockdale Student Center, Monmouth College. Free.

• Saturday, Feb. 26
Small-group workshop: "Ending Apathy on College Campuses." A workshop for students led by Joe Rogers, former lieutenant governor of Colorado and founder of Dream Alive. 1 p.m. Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union, Knox College. The workshop is free but is limited to 30 participants. Advance registration required with Pamela Hernandez, 309 341 7231.
    
Concert: Umoja Community Gospel Choir. 6:30 p.m. Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College. Free.
 
Presentation: "Dream Alive." A dramatic reading and commentary on the life and words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by  Joe Rogers, Former Lieutenant Gov. of Colorado. 7 p.m. Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College. Free.

• Sunday, Feb. 27
Concert: "A Tribute to Black History Month." Performances by two choirs from Peoria -- Ward Chapel AME Church Choir, and Sounds of Grace from Grace Apostolic Church, and the Galesburg Community Mass Choir. 3 p.m. Kresge Hall. Co-sponsored by the Galesburg African-American Support Group, Knox College Black Studies Department, and the Association for Black Culture Centers.

Black History Month events at Knox College are sponsored by several student groups, including the ABLE Center for Black Culture, Sigma Alpha Iota, Knox College Union Board, Business Club, Students Against Sexism in Society, Lo Nuestro, and Harambee Club; and by the Knox College Jazz Ensemble, Office of Intercultural Life, and Black Studies program; and by the Association for Black Culture Centers.
