Insurance and illness FAQ

Even though you try to eat well and get enough rest, you will sometimes find yourself feeling ill. The cost of medical care in the United States is quite high and is often a shock to international visitors.

If you feel ill during the day you may go to the Knox College Health Center located near the soccer field at 175 West Street in the lower street side level of Furrow Hall. After the Health Center is closed you may go to Prompt Care located at 1707 N. Henderson Street. If Prompt Care and the Health Center are closed, the best rule of thumb is to ask yourself, "Can treatment wait until the next day?" If so, go to the on campus Student Health Center when it is open and avoid emergency room charges. However, if you feel that you need emergency medical attention, by all means go to the hospital Emergency Room.

Do I need medical insurance?

Yes. Click here to learn more. You are encouraged to purchase supplemental medical insurance if possible. Alternately, if your family medical insurace covers you in the United States, provide documentation of that coverage and you will not be billed for the Knox Plan.

Your best academic performance takes place when you attend class whenever possible and participate actively as a student. However, if you are too ill to leave your room for meals, you are too ill to attend class. Remember, it is your responsibility to speak to your professor and make up all work missed. If you feel so ill that you miss two class sessions, you should visit the Student Health Center or Prompt Care and ask for a note for your student file. Please bring the notice to the Office of Student Development in Old Main 103, as soon as you are up and about again.

International students who have ongoing health problems that require a reduction in course load must get permission from the International Advisor before dropping a course, in order to maintain status.
