Parents & Families

Relax, you’re in the right place.

Things Parents Always Ask Us

Take a look at some of the most commonly asked questions here at Knox.

At first glance, a year at Knox looks like it costs as much as a new luxury car. Rest assured—more than 80 percent of (U.S., first-year) students qualify for financial aid based on need. For most students, that total cost is much, much lower.

If you’re in Illinois, Knox will meet 100 percent of your student’s financial need through the Prairie Promise program.

Your student will also be considered for a wide range of scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities.

Our academic program is designed so students get practical, hands-on experience in the fields that interest them most. You don’t just read a biology textbook–you reconstruct the skeleton of a marine vertebrate. Psych majors can spend an entire term working at a local community organization during Clinical Psychology Term.

There are dozens of opportunities to pursue internships, study abroad, and take on leadership roles in student organizations. And frankly, our alumni make a powerful professional network—they win Emmys, found successful companies, and occupy the C-suite at Fortune 100 companies.

Students’ first year at Knox will prepare them for the challenges of college-level coursework and help them adjust to living independently in a new community. Our First-Year Experience program is like an ongoing orientation–with plenty of opportunities to make friends, get involved in the Galesburg community, and learn about the academic resources available to help students succeed.

Our First-Year Preceptorial is also a great introduction to academics at Knox. It’s interdisciplinary–so you work with faculty from many departments. It strengthens your reading, writing, critical, and communication skills.

This is the kind of college experience you dream about—late-night discussions, plenty of art and music, and no shortage of great local restaurants. Our community is small enough that you’ll get to know many of your classmates and professors well, but big enough that there’s no worry you’ll be bored.

Building Good Futures at Knox

Long before Joe Bastian ’67 started a thriving restaurant franchise in North Carolina, he was a student from a family who had to work hard to make ends meet. He and wife Diane established Knox’s Bastian Center for Career & Pre-Professional Development to help current Knox students succeed after graduation.

We’re so happy about the environment Knox provides. Academics, friendships, mental health support, it’s all here. We couldn’t be happier for her.

I’m a first-generation student—my mom’s a single parent, she didn’t graduate from high school. She was freaking out when I decided to leave the country. I’m really lucky to have the opportunity to do these things through my education, but it wouldn’t be possible if my family didn’t support me.

My mom and my grandmother were determined to get me through college. They were asking, ‘What all do we have to mortgage? How is this going to happen?’
