Okay, So How Do I Pay for Study Abroad?

International travel may never be more affordable for you than it is while you’re in college. For one thing, if you plan to spend a term, a semester, or an entire academic year off campus, your Knox financial aid package will apply toward your tuition at your destination academic institution. There are also plenty of other funding sources Knox students can access, including:

  • Your $2,000 Power of Experience funding (if you’re a junior or senior)
  • Scholarships and financial aid from your chosen program (Knox students often receive very generous awards!)
  • Competitive scholarships, including the Gilman, IIE Freeman-Asia, and the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA)--see a list of other opportunities

Your study abroad experience begins at the center of the Knox campus.

Alumni Hall is more than one of the best places to study on campus. It’s also the home to the Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies. It’s the best place to begin exploring your options for off-campus study.

We’ll help you find a program that’s a good fit for your educational and career goals–as well as other experiences you’d like to make a part of your off-campus experience, like an internship, a research project, or a volunteer opportunity. We’re also here to help you make sure you have everything you need before you leave and help you make the transition back to campus when you return.

Spend a week, a month, a semester, or whole academic year off campus.

1-2 Weeks

There are a number of Knox courses that include a short travel component as part of their requirements. You may end up in the Middle East working at an archaeological dig, travel to Ghana to study drumming, or cap off Japan Term with two weeks exploring the country and culture up close.

2-6 Weeks

Knox’s six-week winter break is an ideal opportunity to go out and explore. Explore coastal restoration in Belize. Volunteer as a Spanish language translator at the Mexican border. Or join a spring break trip to help out with disaster recovery efforts.

3-12 Months

Looking for a longer engagement? You can study for a term, a semester, or a full year at one of our partner institutions.

Knox in Denmark

Cathy Satyal came to Knox from Nepal to study international relations–and spent four months in Denmark exploring European politics during her time here. She met diplomats, visited EU headquarters in Belgium, and came away with a new perspective on her culture.

What Students Say

  • Kaitlyn smiling at the camera in the Red Room in the library.

“I think the best part about studying abroad—apart from learning this ridiculous amount of information that I loved every aspect of—is that it opened up an avenue to be more independent and to make more informed decisions. I think studying abroad has definitely helped me grow as a person.”

“Akita International University is a tiny university in Northern Japan, and a whopping four hours from Tokyo by bullet train. [Because it] isn't in a highly westernized urban center, like Osaka and Tokyo, it gave me the best chance at seeing traditional aspects of Japan without commuting terribly far from my university.”

“I was surprised about how much independence I had and how easy it was for me to adapt to a routine in each country. I was surprised about how easy it was to navigate public transportation, especially in Berlin. I was expecting to have a hard time finding my way around, but it ended up being part of the adventure to be so independent.”

    —Halle Gerash

“Studying abroad in France gave me exposure to the professional world. I had an internship at Stade Toulouse, which was the most successful rugby club in France and Europe, and this allowed me to see the operation and strategic side of a large-scale business, which really got me interested in strategic operations and management consulting.”
