Are You Ready for Fall '08?

We've
been washing windows, waxing floors, and mowing acres and acres of lawn
in preparation for fall term. Is your student ready for the trek back
to Knox? Are YOU ready for the coming term?
Whether you're the parent of a new student in the Class of 2012, or
you're more concerned with resumes and job applications as Commencement
'09 looms, there are probably a few things you don't know or have
forgotten over the course of this busy year. Here are a few links
that may help:
And don't forget to visit
www.knox.edu/parents throughout the year for information specifically for you, the
parent of a Knox student. Please note that Move-In day on
September 6 may be especially busy, as
Art in the Park is taking place in Standish Park across from the Knox Campus. Plan ahead and take a moment to check out
parking options on campus!
If you are the parent of a Knox "
legacy,"
a student who has followed a relative to Knox, your student should
have received an invitation to the legacy picture at 11:30 a.m. on
Saturday, September 6 at Old Main. Contact
Jennifer Gallas if you have any questions.
New On-campus Emergency Notification System
Knox recently implemented the
Connect-ED® notification system
to allow the College to reach all students and employees with
time-sensitive information using voice, e-mail, and text messaging. During critical situations, the
College can broadcast pertinent information and provide details on an
appropriate response.
You can help us by encouraging your student
to sign up for the service so he or she will receive immediate
notification of any campus emergency, such as weather warnings. We are
currently only able to provide notification to students, faculty, and
staff of the College.
The Connect-ED service allows up to six different phone numbers, two
e-mail addresses, and a mobile phone number for a text
messaging device. The best emergency contact number is probably the
student's mobile phone. Contact information will not be shared with
other entities. It is kept separate from student or employee records and
is not listed in the directories or online.
NOTE:
Incoming students will be able to access this system when they receive
their computer passwords during Knox orientation. Current students may
sign
up for Connect-ED® now or when they return to campus.
Family & Friends Weekend
Information about
Family & Friends Weekend, October 24-26, will be mailed in mid-September. We appreciate
those who took time to fill out the family weekend survey in the
spring and have taken your suggestions into consideration as we've planned this year's event. A
tentative schedule
is now available, as you make plans for the weekend. Updates and online
registration will be posted after the term begins in September.
We invite you to participate in our
"Taste of
Home" project! During the week leading up to Family & Friends
Weekend 2008, dining services will feature select recipes provided by the parents of Knox students.
Submitted recipes will be considered for any of our meals during the week, and the
student's name will be featured in publicity during the meal. To submit a recipe
online, send the recipe, your name, and your student's name and class year to Jennifer at
knoxparents@knox.edu. Recipes submitted
by October 1 will be given full consideration.
A Greeting
from Jennifer Gallas

Hello
from Knox! It's hard to believe that classes start in two weeks.
The athletes have returned, and I'm always happy when I see the campus
full of life!
I have a couple of things to share with you:
- First, congratulations to our Parent Association members who are parents of recent graduates -- Kent
and Theresa Jaffe (Erica '08), John Janicik (Sarah '08), Ian and Nancy
Kopelman (Meredith '08), and Judith Newmark (Eden '08). I thank
them for their help over the past few years with the parent
committee, and have appreciated their help and dedication to the
parent program.
- It seems like such a short time ago that we said goodbye and good luck to
the Knox College Class of 2008 ... but what are they doing now? How many
are in the working world and how many have headed back to school? See where the Class of '08 are now and what they are doing with their lives.
- On the other end of the spectrum -- welcome to parents of students from the Class of 2012! We hope you will stop by our Parent Drop-in Session during new student orientation on September 6 to visit with current parents and relax after student move-in. We also hope you will attend the President’s Welcoming Reception
at Ingersoll House later that afternoon. These activities are planned
specifically to welcome new Knox parents to the community.
- I’m excited to tell you about a new project by the Parent Association Steering Committee. We have set up a Knox Parents Yahoo! Group
to allow Knox parents to talk to each other, share information, and ask
questions. You will need to become a member of Yahoo in order to join
the group, which involves a simple registration. All Knox parents are
invited to join!
It's going to be a great year! Hope to see you soon at Knox.

A Note from
Xavier Romano
It is hard to believe that the summer will draw to a close, and your
student will be arriving on campus for fall term 2008. We have
already welcomed the athletes back to Knox, and they are getting ready
for the fall sports competitions.
This edition of
The Knox Parent newsletter features the details
you’ll need to know as you prepare for your arrival. The summer
has been very busy as we prepare to welcome around 400 new students, in
addition to all of our returning students, to campus... but let me
assure you that this is a number we can house without any overcrowding.
This means a room designed for two people will house two people.
Enjoy what you have left of your summer with your student. I look
forward to meeting all of you this fall. Bear in mind that the
transition to Knox is fast, furious, fun, and intense, so give your
student time to adjust! And, of course, do not hesitate to contact any
of our offices when and if we can be of help and/or support to you.
Best wishes!

Athletic Facilities Update
The
Knosher Bowl is complete! Knox's football field, formerly known as the Knox Bowl, has been renamed in
honor of Harley Knosher, long-time Knox coach and athletic director. Knosher
coached and taught from 1960 until his retirement in 2000, and served
as athletic director from 1964 to

2000.
See pictures of the renovation from start to finish.
The first home game in the Knosher Bowl is Saturday,
September 6, at 1:00 p.m. If you happen to be on campus with your son
or daughter that day and want to cheer on the Prairie Fire, please stop
by the Bowl!
Renovations to
Memorial Gymnasium are also complete. The enhancements were designed to retain the integrity of the
"historic feel" of Memorial Gym, while improving the facilities for the te
ams and
spectators.
The basketball court was named
Tim Heimann
Court after the 24-year Knox head men's basketball coach, who retired from
coaching at the end of the 2007-08 season.
