Friday, October 24, 2008

10:40 a.m. - 3:50 p.m.  Attend Knox classes.  A list of courses open to visitors will be displayed around campus and in the final schedule online soon. Consult the Campus Map (PDF) for locations. 

4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Welcome Center Check-in.  Pick up your final schedule and packet in Ferris Lounge,  Seymour Union.

7:30 p.m. Tartuffe by Molière, directed by Neil Blackadder, associate professor of theatre. Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts (CFA). $10/adults; $5/Seniors; Students and Knox community free. Tickets available at the door.

9 a.m. – 10 a.m. Welcome Center Check-in. Pick up your final schedule and packet; talk with other parents, faculty, and staff; grab a famous Swedough's donut and some coffee. Lobby, CFA.

10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Meet the Knox Administration. Meet Roger Taylor '63 (president), Xavier Romano (vice president for student development and dean of students), and Steve Bailey (associate dean of the college). Kresge Hall, CFA.

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Jazz-a-Thon. Seven hours of live jazz music by Knox College student combos. The Gizmo, Seymour Union. Free.

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Tours of the Old Jail. Enjoy an informative tour of a piece of Knox County history right here on campus! Sponsored by Habitat for Humanity. Donations are welcomed. Old Jail.

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Knox College Bookstore open. Lower level of Seymour Union.

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Internships and the Knox Experience. Is your student considering an internship as part of his or her educational plan? Find out about internship opportunities with the Knox College Internship Program. Join Terrie Saline, internship coordinator for the Center for Career and Pre-Professional Development, for more information and discussion. Kresge Hall, CFA.

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Creating a Positive Web Presence. A look at online resources and information affecting students today and their choices for life beyond Knox. Discussion led by Vicky Romano, instructional technology specialist. Round Room, CFA.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Q & A: Study Abroad with Knox in Barcelona, Besançon, Buenos Aires and other locations. Learn about Knox's study abroad opportunities through a question-and-answer session with the program staff. Students and/or families welcome. Kresge Hall, CFA.

Lunch. Reasonably priced lunch options in the Gizmo and Hard Knox Café, Seymour Union.

1:00 p.m. Knox College Women's Soccer vs. Beloit College. Knox Bowl. $3/Adults; $2/High School Students; $1/Children 6 & older; Free/children 5 & younger and senior citizens.

1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Parent's Drop-in with the Dean of Students. Do you have questions for Dean Xavier Romano, vice president for student development & dean of students? Take this opportunity to ask him! Old Main, Room 103.

2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Student Research Presentations. Sample the quality undergraduate research being completed by Knox students. Invited students will give brief overviews of research they are conducting. Alumni Room, Old Main.

5 p.m. Havdallah Celebration. A gathering for Jewish students and their family and friends for the closing of the Sabbath ritual. Sponsored by the Hillel Club. Alumni Room, Old Main.

Film Festival: Family Dynamics and Body Politics: Women Directors of the Spanish-Speaking World.  October 24-26th, 2008, at The Orpheum Theatre in Downtown Galesburg.  Sponsored by the Modern Languages Department at Knox College. Films include Te doy mis ojos  (Take my eyes) by Icíar Bolláin of Spain,  XXY by Lucía Puenzo of Argentina, Madeinusa  by Claudia Llosa of Peru, Un novio para Yasmina  (A boyfriend for Yasmina) by Irene Cardona of Spain, Real Women Have Curves by Patricia Cardoso of Colombia, and Niña santa (The Holy Girl) by Lucrecia Martel of Argentina.   FREE and open to the public.

Green Oaks Biological Field Station: Benefits the Knox College community by providing a place for learning, research, contemplation and recreation. Green Oaks will be open for self guided tours on Saturday and Sunday from sunrise to sunset. Green Oaks Field Station is located near the Spoon River in western Knox County, about 20 miles from the Knox campus. Maps will be available at the Welcome Center at Family and Friends Weekend.
