Knox Jazz Year was recently named a recipient of the “Turnout” grant from the Galesburg Community Foundation as part of an annual effort to bolster regional nonprofits. This year, more than $384,000 was awarded to nonprofits, the largest amount in the history of the annual grant cycle.
Managing Director of Knox Jazz and Instrumental Programs Andy Crawford explained that the grant was awarded in recognition of the College's local educational programming provided through the main jazz events hosted each year. This includes the Fall Jazz Series, Mirza Residency, and the Rootabaga Jazz Festival. Each of these events provides opportunities for local outreach at Galesburg District 205 schools, the public library, as well as a jazz masterclass at the Galesburg Community Arts Center and the Orpheum Theatre.
The funds from this grant will help support these educational outreach programs moving forward. Crawford says he is proud of the connection the jazz program has nurtured between Knox and Galesburg and hopes that these events will continue to increase local interest in the art.
“We need to cultivate an interest in jazz to help it thrive,” Crawford said. “Connecting the Galesburg and Knox communities provides an opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy great music.”
