"Horizons" Showcases Student Research and Creative Work

Knox College will showcase the wide range of research and creative work undertaken by its students in a series of free, public events, "Horizons: A Celebration of Student Inquiry, Imagination, and Creativity," from May 4 through May 11 on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois.

The series will feature presentations, performances, and exhibits that illustrate the exemplary independent research, scholarship, and creative work of Knox students from all academic fields.

Events will include an extensive student art show; multi-media presentations on research, creative projects and off-campus study; theatrical performances; and dance and choir concerts. In its inaugural year, Horizons is presented by The Gerald and Carol Vovis Center for Research and Advanced Study, in conjunction with College's 175th anniversary celebrations and the installation of Teresa L. Amott as the 19th president of Knox College.

Friday, May 4
Al Young Art Show and Awards Reception: Student submissions of two- and three- dimensional art utilizing a wide range of mediums will be on display. The judge is Mark Pascale, curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago. 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Lobby, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

Saturday, May 5
Interdisciplinary Student Showcase and Reception: Student posters and media presentations will be displayed through Seymour Library. At 5:00 p.m. President Amott will be joined by Knox Trustee Gerald '65 and Carol Klail Vovis '65 to formally acknowledge the student presenters. 2:00-5:30 p.m. in Seymour Library.

Saturday, May 5
Spring Dance Concert and Post-Show Reception: The closing night concert featuring student choreographers and dancers will be immediately followed by a reception and displays showcasing the work of Knox student choreographers, dancers, and stage/light/costume designers. 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Harbach Theatre, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

Monday, May 7
The Davenport Awards in Poetry and Playwriting: Prizes for original student work will be judged and awarded by Knox alumni Joseph Lennon '90, Yvonne Murphy '89 and Tim Lord '98. 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Alumni Room, Old Main.

Tuesday, May 8
Music Capstone Presentations and Off-Campus Study Poster Session: Senior capstone projects in music will be presented in the Taylor Lounge. In the adjacent Game Room, student posters and displays will showcase the independent scholarship and creative work of Knox students as accomplished through off-campus study or international travel experiences. 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Taylor Student Lounge & Game Room, Seymour Union.

Thursday, May 10
Student Playwright's Workshop: Knox student playwrights will present readings from their original scripts of one-act and full-length plays. 4:00-6:00 p.m. in Taylor Student Lounge, Seymour Union

Friday, May 11
Knox College Choir Concert: The Knox College Choir, directed by Laura Lane, will perform a repertoire of choral pieces, some of which were performed during their spring break tour through Spain. The concert will feature "Youth and Pioneers: An Ode" by Daniel Godsil, commissioned in honor of Knox's 175th anniversary and premiered the week before at the May 5th installation of Teresa Amott as Knox's 19th president. The text of the work is based Carl Sandburg's speech at the rededication of Old Main in 1937. 7:30 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 101 N. Prairie St., Galesburg.

"Knox is a recognized leader in the promotion of undergraduate research, scholarship and creative work," said Lawrence Breitborde, Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. "We've been in the forefront of encouraging and supporting students as pioneers in the pursuit of original knowledge, from our very first student-faculty research collaboration of record in the 1920s, through our participation in recent national initiatives such as the Council on Undergraduate Research, Project Kaleidoscope and the National Council on Undergraduate Research."

More than 85% of Knox students complete independent study, research or creative projects. Knox awards its students more than $250,000 annually to support research and creative projects.
