Homecoming 2017: 6 Things to Know

New this year is an alumni dance class, food trucks, and a faculty reading and reception to mark the formal end of the 50th anniversary celebration for Knox's Program in Creative Writing. Homecoming features more than 100 events from October 27-29.

Kevin F. Thompson '85 has been named director of Transportation for America. Thompson previously served as the director of communications & legislative affairs during the Obama administration for the Federal Railroad Administration at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Tracy Palmer Berns '86 has been brought on as chief compliance officer for AMAG Pharmaceuticals. Berns is coming from her position as vice president of ethics and compliance at Medtronic, and brings more than 20 years of industry experience with her.

Vida Cross '88 and Robert Hellenga (emeritus faculty of English) were among 80 "authors and creative people with ties to Chicago" honored at the Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner (a benefit dinner for the Chicago Public Library). Honorees were toasted by the mayor and the governor.

Actor, YouTube star, and comedian Vir Das '02 has a Hulu comedy series in development with The Goldbergs executive producer Doug Robinson. The series follows his recent Netflix stand up special from earlier this year.

Five-time Grammy award winner Maria Schneider will present her original compositions at the Galesburg Orpheum Theatre at 7 p.m. on November 9 to cap off this year's Mirza Jazz Residency. Performing her work at the free concert will be The Knox Jazz Ensemble, Illinois State University Jazz Ensemble I, and Western Illinois University Jazz Studio Orchestra, as well as guest soloists Chip McNeill and Todd Kelly.

For more than 20 years, Monica Corsaro, Knox's new director of spiritual life, has pursued a career that combines ministry and political activism.

Professor of English Laura Behling has been selected as a Fulbright Specialist. She will serve as an expert consultant on curriculum, faculty development, institutional planning, and related subjects at academic institutions abroad. The term of her appointment runs through 2020.

Professor of Theatre Neil Blackadder's translation from German of Maxi Obexer's play Illegal Helpers was presented in staged readings in June at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and in August by Voyage Theater Company.

Professor of Economics Steve Cohn's book about the evolution of economic theory in China has been published by Routledge Press. The book analyzes how and why neoclassical economics replaced Marxist economics as the dominant economic paradigm in China.

Bright Professor of American History Cate Denial has been appointed to the Dean of the Graduate College's External Advisory Board at the University of Iowa, where she will serve from 2017-2020.

Professor and Director of the Art History Program Gregory Gilbert and Information Technologies Librarian Laurie Sauer attended an ACM FaCE-sponsored workshop on virtual college museums. Gilbert and Sauer are planning to digitize the college's art and archival collections as part of an art museum studies initiative at the college.

Assistant Professor of Classics Hilary Lehmann and Visiting Assistant Professor of Asian Studies Otilia Milutin led a two-day panel comparing gender roles and sexuality in ancient Greco-Roman and Japanese societies. 'Gaia and Genji: Gender and Sexuality in the East and West' featured discussions which helped to demystify philosophies of Japanese culture, while reframing oft-forgotten Greco-Roman conceptions of gender.
