New Student Lounge Honors President Taylor

Dedication of the new student lounge in Seymour Union concluded with a surprise announcement. The Student Senate elected to name the new lounge Taylor Student Lounge & Game Room in honor of retiring President Roger Taylor '63. The announcement caught him off guard. "For the first time in 10 years, I'm speechless," a visibly moved Taylor commented.

The Taylor Student Lounge consists of two areas: a general lounge space with tables, TVs, a stage and sound system; and a game room with pool tables, ping pong, and foosball, plus a kitchen/vending area with snack machines. Plenty of chairs, windows, and seating areas are intended to make the lounge a pleasant space to relax or study in. Student input was sought to ensure that the furnishings, games, and equipment would be ones students would enjoy.

Make Plans Now for June 4 Commencement

Knox College students at CommencementThis year's Commencement takes place on Saturday, June 4, at 10:00 a.m. on the South Lawn of Old Main. Parents of seniors will receive an information packet soon regarding Commencement; in the meantime, here are a few things you should be aware of:

  • The "Almost There" Fair is a one-stop shop for all seniors preparing for Commencement. The Fair takes place on April 12 and 13 in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union. Your student will receive information about the fair and will have the opportunity to purchase his or her cap and gown from Jostens. Other items will also be available, such as graduation announcements and class rings. Learn more about the fair and other information for graduates.
  • The reception for all graduates and their families will be held in and around Seymour Union on Friday evening, June 3. Watch the Commencement Web site for more details!
  • Commencement events begin with Senior Pumphandle Friday morning and end with Concert on the Lawn Saturday evening. View the entire list of Commencement events.
  • For a place to stay, visit our accommodations page for some suggestions. Please know that Knox does not secure room blocks for Commencement; there has been some confusion about this with area hotels. We also recommend checking with travel search engines like Kayak.com and Orbitz.com for suggestions.

Majora CarterMajora Carter, a nationally known eco-entrepreneur and MacArthur Fellow, will deliver the Commencement address. "Majora Carter was a clear favorite with the senior class," said Tomi Olotu, treasurer of the senior class. "She is a pioneer in helping us understand how environmentally sustainable activity, economic development, neighborhood development, and even our own health are all interconnected. I'm looking forward to hearing her speak." Read more about Carter.

Tax Incentives Designed For Families Paying Higher Education Costs

2010 U.S. Income Tax ReturnThe Office of Financial Aid recently sent a letter and some materials to all current parents regarding the 2010 U.S. Income Tax Return. There are tax incentives designed specifically for families who are paying higher education costs and/or are repaying student loans.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit (up to $2500) and Lifetime Learning Credit (up to $2000) are credits that are available for 2010.  Credits reduce the amount of tax you owe.  The Tuition and Fees Tax Deduction and the Student Loan Interest Deduction are deductions available for 2010.  Deductions reduce the amount of income you pay taxes on.

The letter included a brochure, "Federal Higher Education Tax Benefits Guide for 2010," which provides detailed information on qualifications for the credits and deductions.  Additionally, the Internal Revenue Service Web site may be a helpful resource.

Please keep in mind that not all families qualify for the credits and/or deductions. You are advised to consult with your tax preparer or the Internal Revenue Service to determine if you are eligible.  Be sure to present your preparer with the Form 1098-T statement sent by the Knox College Business Office.  This form was mailed in January to all students who were billed for tuition and related expenses in 2010.
