General Rules

Credits earned prior to matriculation at Knox are evaluated for transfer by the Registrar on the basis of official transcripts submitted by the student. The Registrar consults with members of the faculty when necessary. Course credits earned at other colleges or universities subsequent to matriculation should be approved in advance by the Registrar. Students must return a completed "Transfer Approval" form to the Registrar's Office no later than two weeks before the end of the Knox term prior to when the transfer course is to be taken. Usually approval is not given for more than 3 credits taken during a single summer. Transfer work is only accepted from accredited two or four-year institutions.

Transfer work is credited at the rate of .3 Knox credits per semester hour, or .2 credits per quarter hour. Transfer credits are not counted into the grade point average. No more than 18 credits are accepted from community colleges. Because of the residency requirement, no more than 19 transfer credits overall may be accepted.

Transferable Coursework

In general, liberal arts subjects in which grades of C or better were earned are accepted. Physical education credits are not transferable, nor is coursework in mathematics below the level of precalculus. However, mathematics courses at the level of College Algebra may fulfill the college requirement for Mathematical Proficiency without earning credit toward graduation. If there is a close correspondence between the transfer course and an existing Knox course, the student is awarded credit for that Knox course, otherwise the student receives generic credit in the appropriate department.

With the permission of the department chair, transfer credits may satisfy major or minor requirements. The Registrar may decide whether transfer credits apply to the general education Elements requirements, although Faculty Regulations prohibit credit by examination (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, A-level Exams) from satisfying those requirements.
