Student Named 2015 Newman Fellow

Political science major Charles Harned '16, was recently named a 2015 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national coalition of College and University presidents dedicated to civic engagement on campus.

Sponsored by the KPMG foundation, the Newman Civic Fellowship honors undergraduate students across the nation who have demonstrated extraordinary social and civic responsibility.

"It's really an honor and I can't wait to connect with the other Newman Civic Fellows. I'm excited to hear about all the cool stuff the other fellows are doing and what they're passionate about," Harned said.

During his time at Knox, Harned has made substantial progress in the interest of local education.

Harned co-founded the Anything is Possible Education Foundation, which matches Galesburg area high school students with ACT/SAT test prep tutors. The foundation raised the money to award two scholarships in their first year.

"It's been great being a part of something that's had a real impact on the lives of people in Knox County," Harned said.

Harned also serves as captain of the men's soccer team at Knox and has arranged mandatory weekly study session for team members. He is currently serving as a White House intern.

"Charismatic and humble, ambitious and unfailingly respectful may not be a typical combination of traits, but Charlie possesses all of them. His ability to lead others for the purpose of positive social change is unquestioned," President of Knox College Teresa Amott said in a press release about the fellowship.
