How We Work

  1. We learn to solve problems. We prepare you for your first job out of Knox and the one you’ll have decades in the future. You’ll know about the different theories and models of economics, and more importantly, you’ll know how to apply them to get results.
  2. Our viewpoints are diverse. Our faculty come from a range of backgrounds and economic philosophies. You’ll be exposed to many theories and belief systems. We foster a culture that is willing to explore and challenge the assumptions of the field.
  3. We explore issues big and small. Students have used economics to research big issues like crime rates, teen pregnancy, and global life expectancy. They have also used economic principles to try and explain day-to-day variances in airline, gasoline, and beverage prices.
  4. We’re on the frontier. During Senior Capstone, students apply their experience to the analysis of The Economist. After reading the most recent magazine cover to cover, students assess the economics models and concepts demonstrated in each article.
  5. We think globally. Economics students have taken part in off campus and study abroad programs all over the world, including the London School of Economics and the University of Copenhagen.
  6. Our grads find success. Rishabh Singh '14 is a power markets analyst at Genscape, Inc., in Boston, Massachusetts. Gabe Charles '14 is a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic. Melati Nungsari '10 is a visiting assistant professor of economics at Davidson College. Talip Kilic '04 is a senior economist at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

The Program

Economic literacy is a valuable asset in business, and our introductory courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, and accounting are perfect for students interested in business careers.

You'll take a core curriculum consisting of two courses each in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and statistics, along with single courses in calculus and accounting. Among the electives in the department are courses in economic development, industrial organization, labor economics, environmental economics, international economics, and econometrics. You'll also take a senior seminar that addresses the nature of economic theory as a whole and emphasizes the application of economic theory.

We stress the development of problem-solving abilities and familiarity with computer applications, as well as the implicit and explicit value judgments involved in economic analysis and decision making—preparation that is highly valued by employers.
