How we work

  1. This isn't business as usual. We're training the next generation of leaders in business: entrepreneurs who ask questions and become agents of change around the world. At Knox, business and management prepares you to succeed in careers that don't even exist yet. In the face of a rapidly changing business community, our students stand out as well-rounded professionals who bring a unique perspective to every challenge they face.
  2. We seek real world experiences. The Business Intensive Seminar provides foundational business knowledge while showing students the ropes of financial analysis and effective business presentations. For those interested in serious entrepreneurship, StartUp Term is a 10-week journey from business plan to sales pitch in the tech start-up world. And in the spring, students can sign up for the Chicago Business Immersion trip, which involves networking with business leaders and alumni in the Chicago area.
  3. We develop expertise. Our students achieve depth in a concentration area, focusing in an area of work like Finance/Accounting, Environmental Policy and Management, or a self-designed specialization.
  4. We take risks. Business is about initiative and risk-taking. That's why our classes and mentorship focus on nurturing innovation and developing risk awareness, effective communication, analytical competency, and all the skills you'll need to launch a business venture of your own.
  5. We help you get a jump start on your MBA. Knox offers a pre-professional program which is a partnership with the prestigious University of Rochester Simon School of Business, where you can gain admission to a top-tier business school directly after completion of your Knox degree.
  6. Our grads find success. There's a range of exciting experiences in store for our students: whether it's Phelipe Graske's internship at Goldman Sachs which led to a job offer before he even graduated, or making Africa's 30 under 30 10 years out like Ladipo Lawani '08, our grads are busy developing their business expertise. Business coursework at Knox is grounded in real-world experience. We call it "activated knowledge"—and it means you'll understand both the theory and how to apply it. A typical class might begin with a textbook discussion of (for instance) cash flow, but, from there, it quickly moves from the abstract to the very concrete. Why did Company X succeed? Why did Company Y fail? Our conversations are lively, thought-provoking, and wide-ranging, and you'll be expected to be an active participant.

While the business curriculum develops a broad skillset, students also have the opportunity to gain expertise in a focus area, which can involve classes in environmental science, mathematics, economics, and more. The focus areas are as follows:

  • Finance / Accounting
  • Mathematical Finance
  • Human Relations
  • Global Business / Policy / Development
  • Environmental Policy and Management
  • A self-designed focus area (with approval from an advisor)
