3 Ways to Experience Your Education

1. Explore big issues.

Many of our majors—and minors—pursue College Honors or senior thesis projects. Some even present or perform their work at national and international conferences.

  • "Emperors Among Us: Kanye West, Roman Spectacle, and the Appropriation of Classical Imagery." Kayleigh O'Brien '16 (Honors in Visual Studies and Classics).
  • "'Kathe Kollwitz: Giving Life to Motherhood." Elizabeth Reyes '16.
  • "Captain America and the Evolution of the American Ideological Myth of the Enemy Other." Valerie James '15.
  • "Selling Dreams: Dali and Surrealism in Advertising." Kate Hovda '15.

2. Study off campus.

Knox offers you plenty of opportunities to begin exploring the world while still a student. Almost 50% of Knox students participate in off-campus study and consider their studies abroad to be the highlight of their college experiences.

Knox offers several programs of particular interest to art history students. Knox in New York combines the study of studio art and art history. During Fall Term, students participate in a seminar course that focuses on European and New York artists and art movements from the early 20th century to the present. Over winter break, students travel to New York and visit galleries and museum collections, present a research project, and attend classes and lectures at the Studio School. In the last week, students return to Knox to resolve a body of work based on their experiences in New York.

Here are some more opportunities where you can study art history:

3. Explore life after Knox with an internship

There's no better way to explore the possibilities of life after Knox than internships. Many internships are found with the assistance from the Bastian Family Career Center. Here are a few recent examples:
  • Community Archives and Research Center, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Meredith Beck '20.
  • Belvedere Art Vienna, Vienna, Austria. Mara Lane '18.
  • Galesburg Civic Art Center, Galesburg, Illinois. Elizabeth Reyes '16.
  • Costume Collection, Chicago History Museum. Jaqueline Novak '14.
  • National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. Jessica Brode '13
