For the last three years, the Knox Equestrian Club was focused on casually improving the riding abilities and equine knowledge of its members.
Currently, the club is applying to be a club sport and looking forward to the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level. The Knox Equestrian Club will soon be replaced with a new Knox equestrian team, a committed group of riders whose goals are:
- to practice as a team
- broaden our knowledge of horses
- improve the abilities of the riders to prepare for IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Associations) horse shows in the fall and spring
Team members will ride in weekly lessons taught by the coach, which will focus on skills necessary to do well at shows. The team will compete in both western and English shows. The western shows will include rail work, horsemanship, and reining classes. The English shows will include rail work and jumping classes. All classes are judged on equitation. The team is open to anyone of any experience level, as long as you are committed to learning and working hard.
Meet the Coach: Theresa O'Keefe
Hey everyone! My name is Theresa, and I want to welcome you to the Knox Equestrian Team web page. I have been riding since I was five and have been taking formal lessons since I was seven. I began competing at age nine, and throughout my life I have shown in all three disciplines: western, hunt seat (English), and dressage. I have been showing in western 4-H shows for nine years prior to coming to Knox. I have also ridden in hunter/jumper shows for nine years in various places. I began competing in A-circuit dressage shows at age 14, and at age 17, I qualified for our regional dressage championship. In 2012, I was ranked in the top 95 junior dressage riders in the nation. I have been teaching lessons since I was 15 and in March 2013, I achieved my CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) Riding Instructor Certification. I am looking forward to teaching and learning with all of you!
Meet the Captain: Emma Wille
Hi, I'm Emma Wille, the Knox Equestrian team captain. I'm from LaGrange Park, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. I've been riding since I was eight years old, mostly hunter/jumper. Recently, I picked up dressage and western in preparation for competitions in the upcoming terms at Knox. I am very excited to get to work with a group of people who love horses and riding, and I can't wait to meet all of you. No matter your riding experience, Theresa and I are here to help you and make sure that the equestrian team is a fun and exciting experience for you. Please feel free to contact either one of us with any questions.
