Joseph Puntoriero ’13

At the 2026 Homecoming Convocation, Captain Joseph Puntoriero received the 2026 Young Alumni Achievement Award.

As a U.S. Army Special Operations officer, humanitarian leader, scholar, and mentor, Puntoriero has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to service and leadership. From coordinating international relief efforts to advancing dialogue on global security and mentoring the next generation of leaders, he exemplifies the impact Knox alums are making around the world.

“Knox is where I developed the ability to do new things, challenge myself, and not be afraid,” Puntoriero said. “My career has been that; it’s been jumping at the next opportunity, no matter what it was, whether it be something hard, challenging, or something I’ve never done before. If someone looks to you to take command and lead, even when you didn’t actively seek it but it’s bestowed upon you, you take it; that’s been my career, and that’s something Knox taught me. If you’re given leadership, you’re given duty.”

Puntoriero has served more than a decade in the United States Army. Alongside operational service, he has pursued advanced graduate education and contributed to professional military scholarship. As a U.S. Army Special Operations Officer, Puntoriero’s career reflects ethical leadership, human security, and the development of people in institutions at the local, national, and global level beyond operational service.

What is it like being back on campus?

It’s the first time back for us; we’ve driven through Galesburg a few times, but unfortunately what I was doing in the military kind of precluded the, Hey, leave the old life behind for a little bit. Being back and seeing the development and the changes that have happened, awestruck is a good way to put it. You see very familiar things, but then you walk through a building, you’re like, That wasn’t there before. That room wasn’t there before. The giant whale in the Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center that threw us—it’s amazing; it’s a good, awe-inspiring experience.

You did track and field at Knox; you were a member of Beta Theta Pi. How did your extracurricular activities help you become the person you are?

My time here was formative. Beta became family when you’re away from home. Because of that, the transition to the military was easy: Every time you’re in new leadership, you're learning what the culture is like and how it differs from your last title or little group, which is very similar to recruiting pledges. One group comes in who are wildly different from the last group, and you learn how to mesh everyone together. It’s very similar to track; the sprinters are different from the distance runners, who are different from the throwers, but at the end of the day, you’re all part of the same team.

You met your wife Rayann (Parkinson) Puntoriero ’12 at Knox as part of the track team. How did that happen?

We first met at Beta; she was hanging out and dating someone else then. I was done with midterms, she was done with midterms, and I was talking to my pledge father, and she was kind of the girl in the room. Fast forward a few months, and we’re the only two 400-meter runners on the track team. You work together every day for two hours, you get to know each other, and then, finally, we had a little budding romance that has obviously flourished quite well 16 years later.

What is it about Knox and people who graduate from Knox that has them prepared for what comes after their time here?

While it is an undergraduate institution, the academics are very much at the graduate level. I went to get my first graduate degree, and the writing I did was much easier than what I did at Knox. Knox prepares you well for graduate school, for your master's, or for the workforce.

What does service through mentorship mean to you? How did you benefit from that, and how do you try to pay it forward?

Service and mentorship have always been a big part of my life. It really was instilled through Beta. I remember the last year I lived there, we painted on the wall, ‘leave a legacy,’ and the whole idea behind service and mentorship is that leaving a legacy is establishing something that eventually will never be there when you come back. I’d never want the Beta house to be exactly as we left it; I never wanted to set a record on the track team and have it stand for more than a decade; someone should break it. You should leave a legacy that makes people better, so it grows. If you come to Knox in 2026, you’re laying a foundation that shouldn’t still be there in 2030 because it’s been built on for four years.
