Who is eligible for counseling?

All currently enrolled, degree-seeking students at Knox College are eligible.

What happens in counseling?

Counseling is the opportunity for you to address areas of concerns you may have. Your counselor will work with you to help identify different options available to bring about changes to resolve the presenting concern. The role of the counselor is to help clarify the issues, not to give advice.

How long is a counseling session?

Counseling sessions are 45-50 minutes. If you have an obligation that may interfere with the time, please let your counselor know.

Is counseling confidential?

All counseling is held in the strictest confidence as permitted by law. The counseling record is separate from the academic record.

How much does counseling cost?

Counseling is free to Knox students.

How do I make an appointment?

Call 309.341.7492 and request to see a counselor, email Vicki Swedlund, Administrative Assistant. Please note that regular business hours are Monday-Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm. We do not reply to appointment requests after hours and responses will be made in the order received.

How long does it take to get a counseling session?

Getting an appointment is easy, but depending on the time of the term/academic year, the time can vary. With the consideration of everyone's schedule, we work hard on seeing students in a timely manner. We encourage all students to reach out to get an appointment as soon as they feel they would like to start services.

How long does it take to get a crisis session?

If a student is in crisis during regular hours, we ask that you immediately contact our office for a Same Day Appointment. Your safety is important to us and we want to encourage you to come to get services if needed. For more information see the Crisis Sessions page.

What "counts" as a crisis situation?

It all depends on what it feels like for you. We encourage students to come in for an emergency/crisis session if they feel it is indeed one. We prefer to see you. Some examples of a need for an emergency/crisis counseling session, include:

  • Imminent suicidal thought and/or a plan
  • Imminent homicidal thoughts
  • Severely losing emotional control
  • Gross impairment in thinking ability
  • Exhibiting bizarre behavior
  • Experienced a recent trauma
