Before You Arrive

Computer and Network Requirements to Remember When Buying a New Computer

When searching for the perfect computer to fit your College computing needs, please remember the following basic computer and wireless network requirements. It is important that you review these first, and if you have any questions, please contact our Help Desk at 309-341-7700.

Antivirus Software and Operating System Updates

In addition to keeping your operating system up to date, the College requires you to have antivirus software installed on your computer. Read about the required antivirus software.

Once you have selected your computer, please use the link below to test your computer prior to arriving at Knox to ensure that connecting with the Knox network upon your arrival is a breeze!

Check Your System

You can now check your computer remotely to see if it meets requirements for connecting to the Knox network when you arrive.

  • Go to http://scanme.knox.edu
  • Click "Download" to download the scan agent.
  • Double-click on the downloaded agent to run it.
  • (Note: No action other than scanning and displaying the results will be taken by the agent.)
  • If your computer meets our basic requirements, a "Success Page" will be displayed.
  • If not, a Web page will be displayed showing where your computer does not meet the requirements..
    • Please note that to assist you in ensuring your computer meets our basic requirements, we will provide you with links. And of course, if you need any assistance, you can contact our Help Desk. Links will be provided to assist you in bringing it up to standards.

Once you Arrive

  • During Orientation you will receive instructions on connecting your devices to the campus wireless network.
  • Members of ITS will meet with student orientation groups  to provide an introduction to computing during their time at Knox.
  • The Help Desk will be open and available to answer any questions you may have.
