The Bastian Family Career Center provides career consulting in areas such as self-assessment, career exploration, job search strategies, resume and cover letter construction, and interviewing and negotiation skills. Please call or stop by the office for an appointment to discuss these topics or make use of our library and computing resources.
Career consulting is provided to students in the areas of interest-assessment, career exploration, resume and cover letter preparation, job search strategies, interviewing skills, and decision-making through individual consulting. One tool that is utilized for self-assessment is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which is a widely used measure of personality dispositions and preferences. In career consulting, it helps to identify compatible work settings, relate career opportunities and demands to personality type.
Another online tool used for self assessment is CareerBeam. CareerBeam is a state-of-the art, user-friendly self-assessment program that helps you determine what you want in your career and offers the steps to achieve it. It provides a compilation of the results from the various assessments to assist in clarifying what is important to you. This integrated analysis is helpful to use in career decision-making and career selection. The Career Resource Library houses a variety of information and directories on career fields, employers, graduate and professional schools, and school systems. Handouts on job-hunting, interviewing, resume and cover letter writing, etc. are available free of charge to all Knox College students and alumni.

It is an amazing tool that allows students and alumni to manage a successful job search from beginning to end with real process-oriented goals. This job-hunting web service provides integrated employment research tools where one can search, select, and store job listings from all job boards and all company job positions. CareerShift is a robust system that has tremendous resources to identify contacts and the capability to access in-depth information about those contacts and company's job postings. One can manage his/her confidential CareerShift account securely from any computer 24/7, to update and maintain his/her organized and recorded job search.
A Michigan State survey on recruiting trends for companies cited internship experience as the number one factor in hiring liberal arts graduates. The Bastian Family Career Center encourages students to begin to engage in these experiences as soon as possible in their academic careers. Internships may be arranged for academic credit through a faculty sponsor or through sponsoring organizations with or without pay.
