My name Ravie Fauvette Boungou. I currently live in Peoria, IL, but was born in Brazzaville, Congo (Central Africa). I will be graduating Fall of 2020 with a BA in Elementary Education, double minoring in Education Policy and Dance. I am member of Harambee (representing the various African cultures), A.B.L.E. (Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality), Lo Nuestro (representing the various Latinx cultures), and IVCF (InterVarsity Christian Fellowship). I am also a second year RA for the first year all female identifying suite. I am part of the Terpsichore Dance Collective, and partake in most things dance. I am a part of Trio, and am a McNair and Golden Apple Scholar. I love to do most things that are fun and teach Zumba, dance and tutor during my free time. I became a writing tutor, because I realized the importance and power that came with being able to articulate yourself well to others, especially being an Black African/African American woman who immigrated to the States. Therefore, I wanted to help others find their voice and in helping them to improve their writing skills, they’d have another mode of expression and means to tell their own narrative.
My name is Nicole D`Alterio. I am an elementary education major with a minor in German and a self-designed minor in writing studies. I grew up internationally and so don’t call any one place home, but right now Knox is one of my homes. I started the process of becoming a writing tutor during my Freshman year of school because I wanted more chances to work with students on building different skills as well as improving my own knowledge of writing. I have met so many wonderful people through this position and it has become a huge part of my identity at Knox. Much of my time at Knox is spent at my practicum placement or working at the CTL or as a student worker at the Registrar Office, but I am also on the Water Polo team and try to volunteer whenever I can. Last fall I studied abroad in Denmark and this coming fall I will be student teaching in Germany.
My name is Jonathan Doriscar I am from Miami, Fl . Here at Knox I am a Psychology major with a minor in sociology. I wanted to become a writing tutor because it gave me a chance to work closely with my peers while doing something I love. Written communication has always been one of the most successful forms of persuasion, and being a writing tutor allows me to see that from a tutoring perspective. Currently at Knox, I am very active, I work in Campus Life as a Resident Assistant, in the Disability Services office as Disability Peer Educator, in the Office of Admissions as a Tour Guide, and last but not least I work as an Alumni Ambassador. Fun fact I am also the president of the Anime Club.
My name is Hunter Drish and I am one of the writing tutors in the CTL. I’m from a small town from Iowa called Pleasant Plain. At Knox College, I’m planning on double majoring in English and post-secondary education. I play on the baseball team, and for some reason, I love to indulge into random hobbies including frisbee, magic (pls don’t ask me to do a trick), and most recently, videography. I go by he/him/his pronouns, and if you need help with anything ever, please ask I’m always willing to...mostly because I find it really hard to say no. :)
ps if John ever refers to someone as Dr. Ish, that’s me.
Hello! My name is Caitlin Edelmuth and I am a Biology (pre-veterinary medicine) major with an environmental studies minor. I am most recently from Deerfield, IL and will be graduating in Spring 2021. Success and Writing Tutor
My name is Aaron Kapinos. I am a senior with a major in business and a self-designed minor in
composition and rhetoric. I plan to attend graduate school next year for composition and rhetoric
with the goal of becoming a professor (hopefully at a university somewhere in the Midwest). I
am fairly well involved in the CTL as a success tutor, writing tutor, and the writing coordinator
for the 2019-20 school year. I have also been a teacher’s assistant for John for two terms and
plan to TA another three courses with him over the next year. When I am not reading something
about comp/rhet. theory I like to read epic fantasy series like Patrick Rothfuss’ Name of the
Wind, Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, and Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time.
Hi, I’m Niamh, and I’m a rising senior planning to graduate in Spring of 2020. My majors are music and political science, and I am a Red Room Music tutor. I’m from Shawnee, Kansas, though I was born in London, England. I was one of the first Red Room Music tutors to be brought into the CTL sphere, and it has broadened my understanding of my subject so much. It has been wonderful to see the music side of Red Room develop into a valuable resource for students at Knox College. I am involved in the Knox Jazz Ensemble where I play trombone, I take piano lessons and have taken lessons for various other instruments as well, and I have been on the Knox College softball team for three years.
I am Tyrese but, I go by Reese (T.Y. Reese during my times working in CTL). I am a current member of our football and track team here. I’ll be graduating in 2020, and I’m excited to explore teaching opportunities and graduate school after Knox. I studied at the University of Barcelona in winter of 2019 with the Knox in Barcelona program, and I loved learning about Catalonia and eating tomatoes on toast. I hope to see you soon in Red Room!
My name is Emily Whitten. I grew up in Plano, IL, where there’s more corn than there are people. Here at Knox, I’m a senior majoring in Creative Writing and minoring in Journalism. I’ve been a writing tutor since I was a Sophomore. When I’m not tutoring or in class, you can usually find me hanging out with my cat. His name is Bagel, he’s approximately 3 feet long, and he’s a very handsome boy.
Hello! My name is Nathan. I am a senior at Knox majoring in neuroscience and minoring in Chinese. I tutor Chinese, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and statistics. Hello everyone! My name is Farid Freyha and I’ll be one of your French tutors for this year! I’m a senior majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Psychology. I know four languages and have always had a passion towards learning languages! I started learning French at a young age and would always be interested helping people realize how awesome of a language it is! I would also be in charge of the data that is gathered by the Center for Teaching and Learning!
Success and Japanese Tutor
My name is Chihiro Kawakami. I am from Tokyo, Japan and this is my last year at Knox. I love eating good food and playing sports, especially basketball. (I am in water polo club and swimming team too.) I am majoring in International Studies and double minoring in Spanish and Gender and Women’s Studies. I was studying abroad in Barcelona in winter and spring terms of my junior year, but I have been a Japanese tutor since my sophomore year. I became a Japanese tutor because I was interested in how students learn Japanese as their second language, and I wanted to know what aspects of my country they are interested in. Also, I like learning languages so I thought I could help tutees, taking advantage of my own experience. It’s not easy to learn a new language but it really broadens your world. You can come to Red Room to ask any questions about Japan and Japanese, or just to talk to me! I am waiting for you there!
Chinese and Writing Tutor
Hello! I’m Ty Kiatathikom, a member of Knox’s Class of 2022 from the city of Rockford, Illinois. I am majoring in international relations and minoring in Chinese. I am a native speaker of Thai, and have also studied French since my childhood. I work for the CTL as a Writing Tutor and a Red Room Tutor for Chinese. I am a CTL Tutor because I understand the challenges and complexities that come with learning a new language; I want to help others feel the wonderful sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching proficiency in a language that they love. I believe there is no limit to what students are able to achieve when they have access to the support and encouragement they need.
I am involved on campus elsewhere as a Student Senator, a brother of Sigma Chi, and a member of the Knox YDSA. My hobbies include political activism, reading, and writing. A fun fact about me is that I was voted “Most Likely to Take Over the World” in my freshman year of high school.
My name is Waleed Khan, I am from Chicago, IL, I am a rising senior majoring in modern languages (French and Spanish) and I intend to graduate in the spring of 2020. I love learning languages, and becoming a tutor has allowed me to meet, help, and support other language learners. I think that sometimes while students don’t want to ask a question in class, they might be more comfortable asking a tutor instead. I was born in Pakistan and speak Urdu, French, some Italian, and some Spanish, and I’m always looking for chances to practice speaking all of them. I also make videos to promote the CTL’s tutoring services and I spend my free time drawing and watching movies.
Χαίρετε, εἰμί Jenny! I am a senior from St. Louis, MO. I will graduate in spring 2020 having completed a double-major in Ancient Greek and Latin. Fantasy books seem to dictate all of my decisions. As an eleven-year-old, I fell down an Ancient Greek civilization wormhole due to my childhood hero, Annabeth Chase from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. However, upon coming to Knox as an eighteen-year-old, I wanted to study French and classics so that I could be like J.K. Rowling (who read French with classics at Exeter, a university in England—that’s the reason why there are so many French and Latin words scattered throughout Harry Potter), so my first term here I signed up for Intermediate French and Elementary Latin I. I must have been pretty good at Latin, because at the end of the school year (after having taken more Latin classes) my professor asked me to become the Red Room tutor, since the current tutor was about to graduate. Soon, I declared that I did not have to be J.K. Rowling, but I should be myself, and I wanted to study the Greeks! The following fall I started taking Ancient Greek. Last year, I started tutoring both languages (Ancient Greek did not have a tutor until me). This past summer, I was an ASSET fellow, researching the relationship between Greek and Mesopotamian mythology. I look forward to helping you this school year!
I am Alex Papastergiou. My full name, however, is Alexandros Papastergiou. I come from Thessaloniki, Greece and I am a junior. I am majoring in international studies and am double-minoring in Japanese and international relations. I am tutoring Japanese. I love reading all sorts of books, from history to philosophy and novels. I write as well, and I occasionally sketch. I love languages and I speak German, Greek, Japanese as well as a few phrases to get by in Spanish and Russian. In terms of sports, I like badminton and always enjoy playing when I get a chance or some free time. Speaking of time, I also like to keep myself busy; not a moment's rest, as they like to say. Tutoring is also something I love and I have been tutoring various courses since high school.
I’m Ali, a junior and double major in computer science and psychology. I’m very passionate about the power of learning and find tutoring to be a way for me to learn just a much as my tutees. I help with French, my first language, and love helping students gain confidence with vocabulary and pronunciation tricks. In my free time, I love learning languages, being active, playing chess, and watching or reading psychological thrillers. On campus I’m involved with Greek Life, Women in CS, UNICEF, TKS, and I also work at the Campus Life office.
Hello, my name is Frankie Williamson (they/them) and I am a Red Room tutor for the Spanish department. I will be graduating in 2021 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. I grew up in Seattle, Washington but my family moved recently so now I am based mostly in central Illinois but also in the Basque region of Spain. Outside of school, I am privileged to work with a non-profit organization called Crisis Text Line. I have been working for them for just over a year now and am trained in crisis intervention for all sorts of crises including anxiety, suicide, depression, etc. As a result of having family overseas, I spend a lot of my spare time traveling. I spend a majority of my traveling time in England, but also frequent Spain. I hope to be able to travel to other places in the future. Pictured is me engaging in one of my favorite activities (eating!) at a local restaurant over in Peoria.
My name is Kathryn and I am from Littleton, Colorado. I plan to graduate in 2022, with a major in chemistry and minors in psychology and French. Aside from tutoring psychology, I am the secretary of the Student Senate, the PR chair of Union Board, the Secretary of Alumni Ambassadors, and the treasurer of the Jewish Club. I am the captain of the tennis team and have played for six years! I became a tutor because I love talking about psychology and helping others understand it. A fun fact about me is that I’ve been playing the violin for ten years.
Neuroscience, Psychology, and Statistics Tutor
My name is Shalana Atwell. I am a rising Senior, and I am from Geneseo, IL. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2020 with a major in Neuroscience and a minor in psychology. I am planning on doing an honors research project that centers around modeling commodity prices and using that information to determine option buying techniques that produce high profits with low risk. I am looking forward to being a tutor for the second year and helping you in any way I can in both economics and statistics.

Hi, my name is Tali, I grew up in Clinton, WI, and am really excited to continue tutoring in writing during my final year at Knox. I will be graduating in June of 2020 with a double major in biology and business & management. I became a writing tutor my second year at Knox not only because I love to help others learn and it is a fun group to be a part of, but because it is interesting to see many different perspectives through students' responses to writing assignments. I incur many roles in student organizations on campus including being: Co-Captain of the Equestrian Team, Treasurer for Live-Lit Storytelling, and a member of Students for Sustainability. I hope to see you join us in the CTL or Red Room soon!
Computer Science Tutor
Hi, I'm Tegan and I'm currently a junior majoring in computer science with a minor in biology. My hometown is Newtown, Connecticut, where I am very active with the local Pokemon Go group. At Knox, I am one of the captains for the Knox Ultimate Frisbee Team and a member of the improv club. I also play magic the gathering and a wide variety of video games. Computer Science Tutor
Hi! My name is Michelle, and I’m a Red Room tutor in Computer Science, planning to graduate in 2020. Aside from academics, I’m a member of the women’s water polo team, a graphic designer for The Knox Student, and help with the Women in Computer Science club.
Environmental Studies Tutor
My name is Priyanka. I am from Kathmandu, Nepal. For me, culture is something that is very important because the cultural lessons I received from my grandmother has given me a purpose in life and has also helped create a strong relationship between myself and humanity at large. This very relationship has also made me very passionate about environmental issues.
Currently, I am a junior majoring in environmental studies and business & management. I also work as a circulation assistant at the Seymour Library and student secretary for Owen W. Muelder. Apart from academics, I am part of ASA, Coding Club and Women in CS.

Biochemistry and Chemistry Tutor
My name is Alec Hegg and I am a Chemistry BS major with minors in Biochemistry and Spanish. I’m from East Lansing, MI. and I intend to graduate in the spring of 2020. I became a red room SMC tutor because I enjoy helping people learn and gain a better understanding of the topics they are covering in class. In particular, it is always great to see the moment when whomever you are tutoring understands what you are teaching them, and is able to use that understanding and apply it to a larger system.
Other activities that I do on campus include working as a mechanic for the Knox College Bike Shop, I am one of the captains of the Ultimate Frisbee Team, I’m a member of the chemistry club, and I perform research on hydrosilylation catalysts in Helen Hoyt’s lab.
Biochemistry and Chemistry Tutor
I’m Allen, and I’m a biochemistry major with minors in chemistry and economics. I’m from Naperville, IL, and I’ll be graduating in spring of 2020. I became a tutor because I’ve always liked learning things, and I want to be an advocate for curiosity in others. I also think chemistry gets a bad rap sometimes as being “impossibly hard” and “why did I take this class”, but it doesn’t need to be so difficult if students have good support. In fact, it can actually be fun! In my “free time” I’m busy playing alto sax in the Cherry Street Combo (come hear some live jazz at Fat Fish on Thursdays after Red Room)! Oh, and I do chemistry research with Prof. Hoyt, so if you’re ever hanging out in the basement of the C wing at night I might startle you—just beware
My name is Minnie and I am a double major in psychology and history. When I have free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends in the Gizmo, watching crime documentaries, and training rats to do circus tricks. I look forward to working with you and helping you!
My name is Michaela Kowalewski. I am a senior at Knox majoring in neuroscience with minors in health studies and biochemistry. I am originally from Ogden, Utah. Although I miss the mountains, I have learned to love cornfields and Illinois has started to feel like home. I became a CTL subject tutor in the Spring of 2019. My favorite part of tutoring is all of the motivated students I have met in my subject area. I am involved in a number of clubs at Knox including Food Recovery Network and Alpha Phi Omega. Hello! My name is Grace LaDuca and I am part of the class of 2021. I am from Salem, Oregon and am majoring in biology. My minors are Spanish and environmental studies. Going to tutoring (usually for chemistry) helped me realize how important peer tutoring is and how rewarding it can be for the tutors and tutees. I wanted to become a tutor so I could help other students become more confident about the material they are learning in class, in a supportive and relaxed environment. In addition to tutoring, I am involved in campus activities like, club water polo, swim team, Tea club, and Students for Sustainability. I enjoy composting, going hiking, and eating good food.

I became a math tutor because I love math and want to help others study it better. I enjoy playing soccer and watching movies in my free time.
My name is Jenna Milligan, and I’m very excited to be tutoring in Red Room for Statistics again this year! As a Statistics Minor, I’ve taken STATS 200, 222/225, 223, and 321, with plans to take 322 in the Winter, so I have a decent amount of experience in this topic. I’m also a Mathematics major, which helps as well, because I’m passionate about problem solving and experienced working with numbers. I became a tutor to help others experience the joy and satisfaction both statistics and math have shown me.
Some more about me: I’m from Rochester, Minnesota, and I love the midwest in general, but nothing beats “Minnesota nice”. Other than Red Room, I also tutor for the Math Department, and I’m a captain of the Women’s Soccer Team and an executive member of Blessings in a Backpack, as well as Vice President of Mortar Board. I wanted to be a tutor because I enjoy sharing my excitement about the subject with others. I am also a TA for the 100 level physics classes and work at weekly help sessions focused on the homework sets. It is really fun to work through problems with tutees and watch them develop as students. Outside of tutoring I am co-captain of the ultimate frisbee team. I’m a bio tutor and personally tutoring has saved me in more ways than I can count, which is why I became a tutor myself. When im not doing anything educational I like to play games, watch anime (really good stuff) and series, and I’m crazy about soccer. I hope that taking these classes and coming to Red Room will help you have a good experience with anthropology and sociology.
