Trustee David Schulz Named a 'Top 10' First Amendment Lawyer

Knox College graduate and trustee David A. Schulz has been ranked by Chambers USA as one of the top ten First Amendment litigators in the nation. The annual rankings, released this month, are compiled by Chambers & Partners, which evaluates lawyers and law firms. The Chambers ranking praises Schulz as "extremely bright and effective."

In addition, Schulz's firm, Levine, Sullivan Koch & Schulz, L.L.P., had three of the top ten spots in the Chambers USA ranking of First Amendment litigators.

"It is very gratifying for a small firm such as ours to receive an honor of this magnitude," Schulz said.

A 1974 Knox graduate with a degree in economics and mathematics, Schulz has served for more than twenty years on the College's Board of Trustees, currently as vice chair of the board. He is an adjunct member of the faculties of both the Columbia and Yale Law Schools, teaching a First Amendment course at Columbia in the fall and Yale in the spring.

Schulz heads the New York office of Levine, Sullivan Koch & Schulz, which focuses exclusively on First Amendment litigation. For nearly 30 years he has represented journalists and news organizations, including The New York Times, Associated Press, CBS Broadcasting, Tribune Company, The Hearst Corporation, numerous national and local newspapers, television networks and station owners, cable news networks, and Internet content providers. He was recently retained by a coalition of newspapers, including Dow Jones, The New York Times and the New York Post, in a lawsuit regarding the legality of publishing information on the individual job performance of public school teachers.

Schulz has written extensively on media law and the First Amendment, including "Newsgathering as a Protected Activity," published in "Freedom of Information and Freedom of Expression: Essays in Honour of Sir David William" in 2000 by Oxford University Press.

Schulz received his law degree from Yale Law School and a master's degree in economics from Yale University.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 48 states and 51 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
