Six Things to Know for Homecoming 2017

Knox Homecoming

Knox College will welcome alumni and friends back to campus for the 2017 Homecoming celebration October 27-29.

Share your photos, videos, and memories with the entire Knox community on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by using the hashtag #KnoxHC.

Homecoming has plenty of activities to choose from, and some of them require registering ahead of time. The registration deadline is October 20.

Here are six things you should know:

1. Bring along the kids.

This year's Homecoming festivities feature several events designed with younger folks in mind. For example, alumni who are returning to campus with high school-age children interested in attending Knox are encouraged to join a campus tour and information session on Saturday morning.

Also on Saturday morning, children ages 7 and older are welcome to participate in the Junior Programming Lab, where they'll learn about basic computer programming to create short stories and games. Other activities for children include a Storytime at Seymour Library and a Fall Carnival with face-painting and games near the Knosher Bowl.

2. Watch Prairie Fire athletes in action.

Standout player Rose Griffin, who reached 1,000 career kills this year, and the rest of the Knox volleyball team take on Monmouth on Friday at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym. It's also Senior Night. On Saturday at 1 p.m., record-breaking quarterback Matt McCaffrey and his football teammates play Cornell in the Knosher Bowl.

3. Grab lunch from a food truck.

Not sure what to do for lunch on Saturday? Consider a new option: Local food truck vendors The Boss and Smokin' Willie's BBQ will visit campus from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Cherry Street between George Davis Hall and Auxiliary Gym.

4. Check out a reception or two—or more.

At least 15 receptions are planned for Saturday afternoon and evening. One is a Faculty Reading and Reception marking the formal end of the 50th anniversary celebration for Knox's Program in Creative Writing. Another is the McNair Scholars 25th Anniversary Reception, marking a milestone for that program. Some of the rest include receptions for A.B.L.E. alumni, Alpha Phi Omega alumni and current members, Lo Nuestro alumni, and LGBTQ alumni.

5. Get moving.

Sign up for Saturday's Mary Filosa Brown '82 Memorial 5K Walk/Run, in honor of an alumna who was a member of the Knox cross-country team, a qualifying participant in the Boston Marathon, and a lifelong athlete. If you prefer something a little slower, join certified yoga trainer Laura Bush for Saturday morning yoga.

6. Reconnect with old friends, and make new ones.

This, of course, is the main attraction of Homecoming, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to catch up with former classmates, faculty members, and staff. Consider attending Homecoming Convocation on Saturday morning, where the honorees will include members of the Class of 1967 and 2017 Knox Service Award recipients Maurice Harris '08, Nalini Prakash Hart '03, Joyce Hertko '82, and Gary Moses '65. Stop in at the Peace Corps Program Open House, where Peace Corps Preparatory Program alumni Emily Quade '07 and Casey Jones '87 will share stories of their Peace Corps experiences.

Here's a sampling of other highlights: Sit in on classes Friday, tour the Whitcomb Art Center, have a drink with Professor Frank McAndrew, enjoy the "Taste of Galesburg" All-Class Reception, join the Black Alumni Network (BAN) Meet & Greet, practice your footwork at an Alumni Dance Class, and much, much, more.
