Historian Gerald J. Prokopowicz will give a Lincoln Studies Center Lecture, "Did Abraham Lincoln Own Slaves?" at 4 p.m., Friday, September 7, in the Alumni Room, Old Main, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The lecture is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College.
Prokopowicz is a noted scholar in Civil War history. His publications include two books, "All For The Regiment: The Army of the Ohio, 1861-62," and "Did Lincoln Own Slaves? And Other Frequently Asked Questions about Abraham Lincoln," which is scheduled for release in 2008. He has written numerous articles, edited the quarterly magazine Lincoln Lore, and produced a series of videos about Lincoln.
Formerly the Lincoln Scholar and director of Public Programs at the Abraham Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Prokopowicz teaches history at Eastern Carolina University. He received bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Harvard University. He also practiced law for several years in Chicago.
Prokopowicz is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, the Advisory Board to the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the Lincoln Forum.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
