Food, Fun, and Fables at International Fair 2015

34th Year for Cultural Showcase and Buffet

International Fair at Knox College provides students from around the world with an opportunity to share their cultures

Knox College students from all around the world will showcase diverse food, culture, and entertainment as part of the 34th annual International Fair.

The traditional student talent show, cultural booths, and international buffet will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2015, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. The Saturday events, which are open to the public, will consist of:

Flag Parade & Cultural Showcase: 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Ford Center for Fine Arts, Kresge Recital Hall. Doors open at 1 p.m., and admission is free.

Booths: 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Ford Center for Fine Arts. Fun and educational, the cultural exhibits are organized by Knox students and student organizations. Admission is free.

Food Fair: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Oak Room of Seymour Union. Foods from different countries and cultures are prepared and served by students. Cost is $6.50 for members of the public and for Knox students who don't have a meal plan. Menu items are listed below.

Any donations will be dedicated to the organization #TackleEbola.

With 11% of its student body from outside the U.S., Knox has been ranked among top 25 liberal arts colleges for international diversity and among the top 50 for ethnic diversity.

International Fair is sponsored by the Knox College International Club, one of the College's largest student organizations.

The theme of this year's fair is "Stories & Fables," expressed in I-Mag, a magazine published for the fair by the International Club and which features the creative work of Knox students.

Partial Buffet Menu for Food Fair:

Cameroon: Poulet Dj (spicy chicken breast with plaintains).

German: Bauernbrot ("Farmer's Bread").

El Salvador: Empanadas de Platano.

India: Bhel Poori (puffed rice with vegetables), Gobi Manchurian (orange cauliflower sauteed with soy sauce), Chitra Anna (lemon rice), Mango Lassi (Punjabi mango smoothie).

Indonesia: Opor (white curry).

Latin America: Horchata (rice water)

Malaysia: Gulai Ayam (chicken curry).

Mexico: Carne en su Jugo (meat in its juice), Bunuelos (fried pastry), Agua de Jamaica (hibiscus tea), Chicken Tamales, Cheese Tamales.

Myanmar: Ohntamin (coconut rice).

Additional International Week Events:

Throughout next week, a series of additional events for students also will take place on campus in connection with I-Fair. Those include:

Monday, January 26, Traditional Outfit Day: Students will wear clothing that demonstrates their cultural identity throughout the day. Photos will be taken from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni Hall Atrium.

Tuesday, January 27, Share Your Story in Seven: Whether it's words or lines or something entirely different, students will share in whatever way they choose.

Wednesday, January 28, Not Quite White: A film by Jamil Khoury will be followed by a discussion in the Round Room at 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, January 29, I-Mag Release party: Copies of International Magazine 2015 will be available in Ferris Lounge from 6 to 8 p.m.

Friday, January 30, Knox Amazing Race: The race starts at 5 p.m. in Ferris Lounge. Groups of three may sign up to participate.

Friday, January 30, Chai Town: The Bollywood a cappella group from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will perform at 9 p.m. in Kresge Recital Hall. The event is organized by Union Board and AAINA.
