In Memoriam: Petko Kitanov

Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics Petko Kitanov passed away from natural causes in his home on Sunday, July 13, 2025. A member of the Knox faculty since September 2024, Kitanov had a quiet but powerful impact on his students and colleagues during his short time at the College. He taught students across academic disciplines thanks to his course schedule, including Applied Calculus I, Calculus III, Differential Equations, and Foundations of Analysis. He also worked directly with math majors, advising them on independent study projects.

"Petko was curious about everything to do with math and the sciences and places where math could be applied to other disciplines. He was always a pleasure to talk with, always optimistic and positive,” shared Stuart Allison, Watson Bartlett Professor of Biology and Conservation and current chair of mathematics.

Provost and Dean of the Faculty Melissa Glenn added, “The Knox community is thinking of Petko’s family, friends, and members of our community who knew him well and sending them strength in this difficult time.”

Kitanov came to Knox from Wells College in Aurora, NY, where he served as an assistant professor of mathematics. Over the course of his nearly 30-year career, he taught or lectured at colleges and universities across the United States, Canada, and Europe, including the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Ottawa, the University of Guelph, the University of Idaho, American University in Bulgaria, South-West University in Bulgaria, and the University in Limerick in Ireland. His research and teaching interests included differential equations, mathematical biology, mathematical physics, and mathematical modeling.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s of science in physics from Sofia University in Bulgaria and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Guelph.

“Petko's passion for teaching and research was truly inspiring. He found great joy and fulfillment in his role at Knox College,” shared close friend Emil Davchev. “He deeply appreciated his students, often describing them as motivated learners, and he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to supporting their academic journeys. He was also incredibly grateful for the support and assistance he received from his colleagues during his initial months at the College.”

Kitanov’s niece, Kalina Kitanova, shared the following on behalf of his family: “Petko knew in detail the history of mathematics and its development from ancient times to the present day. He had a wide knowledge of different areas of mathematics and physics. He was our younger brother, uncle, relative, friend, a person with whom you can share everything, talk about everything and laugh.”

Kitanov is survived by his family in Bulgaria.

Additional memories of Petko Kitanov from friends and classmates:

“Petko Kitanov exemplified the spirit of a person dedicated to the noble work of a teacher and researcher, leaving behind an exciting example for all to follow. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.”—Emil Davchev

“I was always impressed by how cultured and erudite Petko was. He was in love with books. Not only math books, but many other topics ranging from ethics, philosophy to economics and history. Whenever he was on a trip in a historical place he would always be so curious and ask numerous questions. He was also one of the kindest people I ever met, and always knew what to say to help people.”—Daniel Fiorillini, friend

“I met Petko in the eighth grade, 50 years ago. It is amazing how quickly closeness in temperament and spirit is revealed in a conversation between two people. At this age, it's more felt than understood. I will miss him! Everyone who knew him will miss him!”—Mitko L, a friend and classmate
