Chirgilchin Concert, Sept. 22

Chirgilchin, Master Throat Singers from Tuva, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, September 22, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The concert is free and open to the public.

Chirgilchin is a group of singers and musicians from Tuva, a Russian province south of Siberia in Central Asia, where "throat singing" was developed. A throat singer creates both a fundamental pitch and a second tone, high above the fundamental.

Chirgilchin's repertoire blends ancient native Tuvan singing with Tibetan chanting. The performance features traditional Central Asian instruments and costumes. The four-member group has performed throughout Europe and North America. Chirgilchin last performed at Knox in 2001.

The concert is sponsored by the Knox College Music Department and Cultural Events Committee.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
