Prepare to Choose Course Preferences

You will choose your course preferences in July and finalize your fall course selections when you arrive on campus in September. In the meantime, we urge you to take advantage of several resources this summer that will help you choose courses best suited for you this fall.

Placement Exams Help You Find the Best Fit. All incoming students must take placement exams. Even if you believe you know where you should (or would like to) start out in a math or foreign language sequence, taking the exams will ensure that you are placed in a class at the level appropriate for your skills. Learn more about placement exams.

Want advice about your course preferences? There's help ...

... by email: Ask-a-Prof is a real Knox professor who will be available to answer questions about courses, academic programs and opportunities, or anything else you would like to know about your academic life at Knox. Ask-a-Prof will be available at askaprof@knox.edu beginning on June 15.

... on campus: All students will meet with their faculty academic advisors as soon as they arrive on campus in September, but we offer the option to meet with an advisor during the summer as well. On Friday, July 21, and Saturday, July 22, academic advisors will be available to meet with you on the Knox campus. Advisors can work with you to help select your fall course preferences and address other academic questions you have. There will be an info session for your parents/guardians, too! Sign up for a session now.

... or virtually: If you'd like to talk to a faculty advisor but can't make it to campus this summer, no problem! Faculty advisors will also be available virtually, by appointment, Tuesday through Thursday, July 25-27. Make an appointment.

5 Things To Do Now

1

Request your transcripts.
Be sure to request that a final high school transcript, any relevant test scores (AP, IB, A-Level, GCE), and any college records be sent to Knox. We need this information not only to maintain your eligibility for financial aid and scholarships, but also to assist your faculty advisor as you register for classes.

2

Prepare for your summer common reading.

Next month, we will be sending a summer reading assignment to help you prepare for your first conversations on campus as part of new student orientation. You will receive this reading in an electronic format. If accessibility issues will make it difficult to read the assignment in that format, please let us know by June 9 so that we can make accommodations.

3

Build your graduation wish list.
Take a look at our recommended packing list so that you can let friends and family know what you will (and won't) be needing when you come to Knox this fall.

4

Check your student portal.
If you haven't done it yet, be sure to submit your Housing Preference Form on your student portal by June 1. We also need to know if you are interested in one of our transition-to-college programs (eligible students have a link on their portal). We've begun placing students in the programs, so don't delay.

See what you'll be doing in the coming months
Each month, you are receiving a "Learning at Knox" message specifically tied to the next steps in preparing for your academic journey. Here is a quick overview of the steps you will take in the coming months:

  • June: selecting your First-Year Preceptorial class, common reading assignment
  • July: Selecting course preferences for fall
