Division of Student Development

One Community

Congratulations on your decision to enroll at Knox College! On behalf of the Division of Student Development, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you into our community. You are embarking on a personal, educational, social, and cultural journey that will forever change your life. When you find that you need support, guidance, or just a simple answer to a question, the Student Development staff—along with the entire Knox faculty and staff—are ready and eager to assist you as best we can. We care deeply about your success and look forward to helping you become the person you want to be.

Over the next few months you will receive information about living and learning at Knox in communications from both Academic Affairs and Division of Student Development:

May: summer bridge programs, placement exams
June: selecting your First-Year Preceptorial class, common reading assignment
July: selecting courses for fall, housing and suitemate assignments

Our wide-ranging curricular and co-curricular offerings are designed to complement one another as you strive to become a well-rounded citizen of the world—a responsibility you will have for life. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about these opportunities and to take full advantage of them when you arrive on campus for our new student orientation: One Community.

One Community will introduce you to how learning happens here at Knox, to our vast array of campus resources and support services, to faculty and staff who will teach and mentor you, and to new friends from around the country and around the world. Throughout this four-day orientation, you will get to know peers from varying cultural backgrounds—students from bustling cities and rural communities—as we unite as one community of living and learning here in the heart of the Illinois prairie.

I encourage you too, to step outside of your comfort zone at Knox. Try something you've never tried before. Take on a leadership role. Make a concerted effort to get to know people whose backgrounds, values, and ideas are different than yours. And know that we are here to support you along the way.

With warmest regards,
