We understand that college is a major transition. To help you cross that bridge from high school to college, we offer three programs for eligible incoming students during the weeks prior to new student orientation. These programs will provide you with tools for success as you navigate a new academic environment and face the personal and academic challenges of being a first-year student.

SPARK Summer Bridge Program

For domestic students who are the first in their families to attend college, we offer the week-long Student Preparation and Readiness for Knox (SPARK) program that gives students the chance to get comfortable being a full-time college student before the entire class arrives on campus. In addition to the summer program, SPARK includes ongoing support that stretches through the fall term and beyond. The program is tentatively scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 1, and runs until the beginning of new student orientation on September 9.

TRIO Bridge Program

This program is also for domestic students who are the first in their families to attend college or are from other traditionally underrepresented groups. It is intended to help students prepare for the rigors of being a full-time college student. The TRIO Bridge Program is tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 4, and runs until the beginning of orientation. The program is limited to those students who apply and are accepted into the TRIO Achievement Program, a TRIO Student Support Services project funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Intensive English Language Program

For new international students whose first language is not English, the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) provides an opportunity to improve English language skills, especially academic writing and speaking, as well as an introduction to campus and community resources. Participating students should arrive on campus August 18. The program runs from August 17 through September 3. The International Student Pre-Orientation Program for all international students begins on September 6.

More information about these three programs can be found on your Pre-Arrival Tracker for those students who qualify. Students interested in the SPARK or TRIO programs should fill out the Transition-to-College Programs Interest Form. International students interested in IELP should fill out the Intensive English Language Program Registration form.

Each of these programs carries a half credit. If you think you are eligible for one of these programs but the link doesn't appear on your portal, please email
