Karla was able to pursue her interests in social justice and community development through summer research and an internship.

Karla Medina worked a communications and media internship, and assisted Professor Teresa Gonzales on her social justice and community outreach research.

Describe your summer experiences.

Through work with Professor Teresa Gonzales, I have analyzed the New Communities Program, which is a long-term initiative to support wide-ranging community development in 16 Chicago neighborhoods. This program involves local residents, leaders, and various organizations in creating strategies to improve their quality of life.

I was also an intern at A+ Media, which offers educational, college, Latino, and custom digital and print-based communications. I learned a lot about increasing a brand's awareness and visibility as well as how to reach target audiences efficiently. I set up a LinkedIn group and created strategies to promote it, wrote one minute bios for the WYCC PBS magazine for members, and wrote an article on study skills and translated it into Spanish.

What inspired you to explore these opportunities?

I was itching to gain different job experiences. I did not know at the time, but this internship and research opportunity have also prepared me to go back to school with better skills to succeed in the classroom. My writing has significantly improved, and I have also learned how to focus better and switch between different tasks to get things done on time.

How has Knox supported you in your endeavors?

Professor Teresa Gonzales has been a huge support for me. She took time to listen to my interests and saw a connection to something that I could help her with. She was also very supportive when I told her that the A+ Media internship opportunity had come up. I can tell that she wants me to succeed and I am excited to listen to more of her words of wisdom as I tackle future endeavors during my time at Knox.

How do you see these experiences having an impact on your future plans?

I am passionate about social justice, something that I hope to pursue, and this research has allowed me to understand successful community organizing.
