Congratulations on your decision to enroll at Knox College. On behalf of the Division of Student Development, it is my sincere pleasure to welcome you into our community.
This fall, you will embark on a personal, educational, social, and cultural journey that will forever change your life. Whenever you need support, guidance, or just a simple answer to a question, the Student Development staff—along with the entire Knox faculty and staff—is ready and eager to assist you. We care deeply about your success and look forward to helping you become the person you want to be.
This message marks the beginning of your First-Year Experience—a collection of curricular and co-curricular offerings that will help you transition into life as a Knox student. The First-Year Experience (affectionately known as Blaze a Trail) includes Fall New Student Orientation, your First-Year Preceptorial, the Residential Curriculum, and other programs that will unfold over the course of the year.
With that in mind, you can expect to receive information over the spring and summer about living and learning at Knox. Our new student section of the website, www.knox.edu/newstudent, is where you will find the things you need to know as you prepare for life at Knox. It includes information about campus life, health and safety, tuition and financial aid, academics, and much more.
You also have a Pre-Arrival Tracker that includes a checklist of the items that need to be completed before you arrive at Knox. This includes choosing your dining plan, taking placement exams, and letting us know what student organizations interest you.
Blaze a Trail will introduce you to how learning happens here at Knox, to our vast array of campus resources and support services, to faculty and staff who will teach and mentor you, and to new friends from around the country and around the world. Beginning with orientation, you will get to know peers from varying cultural backgrounds—students from bustling cities and rural communities—as we unite as one community, living and learning here in the heart of the Illinois prairie. Our wide-ranging curricular and co-curricular offerings are designed to complement one another as you strive to become a well-rounded citizen of the world—a responsibility you will have for life. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about these opportunities and to take full advantage of them when you arrive at Knox.
I encourage you to take a step outside your comfort zone at Knox. Try something you've never tried before. Take on a leadership role. Make a concerted effort to get to know people whose backgrounds, values, and ideas are different from yours. Blaze a new trail. And know that we are here to support you along the way.
With warmest regards,
Dr. MarQuita D. Barker Vice President, Student Development
