Choose Your Courses For Fall Term
We look forward to welcoming new students to campus this fall for in-person instruction following health and wellness guidance for proper physical distancing. There will also be students who cannot make it to campus, but who remain vital members of our Knox community and can participate remotely. See our teaching and learning plans for fall 2020.
Whether you plan to take classes in person or remotely in the fall, now is the time—with the assistance of your academic advisor—to choose your courses for fall term. Your advisor will be contacting you in the next few days to arrange a meeting to discuss your course selections.
How can you prepare for your meeting with your advisor? First, familiarize yourself with the types of courses you'll take during your academic journey. You may also want to watch a recording of the virtual session with Knox faculty and students who recently answered questions from new students and parents about the academic experience.
Then, visit your student portal to choose your preferred courses using the Course Preference form. This form contains a list of fall term courses that includes some special designations regarding how courses will be delivered during fall term.
Hybrid Courses: The majority of Knox courses will blend on-campus and online delivery components. The on-campus components will provide the rich in-person educational experiences that are characteristic of a Knox education. Online delivery will be used when necessary to promote small class sizes or accommodate health needs of faculty or students. These courses are designed to be adaptive to changing conditions.
Required On-Campus Components: A course marked with an asterisk (*) indicates a course that has significant on-campus course components. These could involve labs, studio work, or other on-campus experiences that are not possible to replicate in an online environment. These courses are generally not appropriate for students planning to enroll for off-campus remote instruction only. Those students should consult with their advisor to see whether special modifications can be made to permit their participation.
Remote Delivery: Courses marked with a plus sign (+) are courses for which the full course experience can be accessed through a remote learning environment and are offered so that students who are unable to return to campus are still able to continue their Knox education. These courses do not have required on-campus components, and instruction will occur virtually. However, students residing on campus can enroll in them should they wish and may be able to participate in optional on-campus lab or section experiences.
On the Course Preference form, you will be asked to submit three course preferences and three alternates. These course preferences will not be binding decisions in any way, but will help guide the conversation you will have with your advisor next week. You may stick with your initial preferences or you may decide to revise your choices after further discussion with your advisor.
If you have questions before you meet with your advisor, feel free to email askaprof@knox.edu. Ask-a-Prof is a real Knox professor who will be available to answer questions about courses, academic programs and opportunities, or anything else you would like to know about your academic life at Knox.
