Your First Course

First-Year Preceptorial is a small seminar course that all first-year students take. You will enroll in two additional courses during the fall term, but First-Year Preceptorial—or "FP" as it is universally and affectionately known—will be your foundation.

FP embodies the core values and themes of a Knox education. One of those values is ownership of your education. There is not one FP course, but many FP courses from which to choose; some even provide an opportunity to live with your classmates in a Living/Learning Community.

Learn more about the various FP courses, and then complete your FP Course Preference form on your portal.

And don't forget that if you have a question about courses or the academic opportunities at Knox, Professor/Advisor Tom Moses will be available through mid-August to answer any questions you have at

4 Things To Know

Be on the lookout for your first assignment—The Summer Common Reading.
You will soon discover that a Knox education, including FP, is built on conversations about ideas. Our community thrives on conversations. The Summer Common Reading is your opportunity to prepare for your first conversations on campus. All entering students will read the the novel Make Your Home Among Strangers by Jennine Capo Crucet; expect to receive an e-mail early in July with an access code with which to download your copy of the e-book.

Also coming in July—Course Preferences.
You will take three courses this fall. Letting us know your FP preference is the first step. In July, you will let us know your preferences for your remaining classes. More info to come ...

Sign up for Summer Advising Days July 21-22 (on campus) or July 25-27 (virtual).
On Friday, July 21, and Saturday, July 22, academic advisors will be available to meet with you on the Knox campus. During set hours the following week (July 25-27), you can sign up to speak with "virtual advisors" via your computer or by phone. Advisors can help you select your fall course preferences, including FP, and address any questions you have about academic planning or campus life. For the on-campus advising program, we will also offer an information session for your parents/guardians and answer their questions about academics and life at Knox. Sign up for a campus advising session or virtual advising session.

Submit health forms.
Visit your student portal to complete immunization, medical history, and medical insurance information forms.
