Dear Students and Colleagues,

I am writing with a campus update regarding off-campus study.

As a cornerstone of the Knox educational experience, international study expresses our core institutional commitment to understand and embrace our world. Delivering on that commitment depends on the hard work of Knox faculty, academic advisors, and staff; the support of program providers with offices in the U.S. and overseas; airlines and travel agents; a wide array of international institutions, governments, and local officials; and the generosity of host families and other local hosts. The current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is placing pressure on every linkage in this chain of support.

Out of an abundance of caution for the health of our students and with deep consideration of the pressures mentioned above, we are adopting the following guidance for our students, faculty, and staff:

  • All College-organized international group travel has been suspended until further notice.
  • The College is cancelling its Knox-in-Barcelona program for the remainder of the current academic year. Students currently in Barcelona are wrapping up their academic term and will return to the U.S. The group of students planning to depart for Barcelona for Spring will instead be able to return from spring break for Spring Term classes at Knox.
  • Students residing in other off-campus locations around the world are permitted to continue their studies as planned. We rely on our partnership with a network of skilled and highly-valued program providers with on-site staff and instructors, who monitor local conditions and regularly update us on the progress and policies of their academic programs. Students should be in continual contact with their local program offices and respond to their guidance. In some cases, programs are adopting online / remote learning and distance education to allow students to complete their programs.
  • Students should contact the Stellyes Center for Global Studies before making any decisions about departing a program before its completion. International students should be in contact with International Student Services to discuss any questions related to their programs and subsequent travel. As is always the case, students can contact Associate Dean of the College Tim Foster with any questions about academic progress.

Please contact the Stellyes Center for Global Studies if you have questions related to specific study abroad programs.

For general College updates regarding the coronavirus issue, please refer to our updates page.

We very much regret these interruptions and are grateful to all affected for your patience and understanding. As the pandemic stabilizes, we will work with each individual student to identify opportunities in the future for them to have a global educational experience.
