Hello all,  With the recent decision to extend Spring Break and move classes online, you are likely making plans to move out and head home. All students must plan to leave campus by Thursday, March 19 at 4:00 p.m, although exceptions will be granted for a limited number of students to stay on campus as described below. This is essential if we are to limit the likely spread of COVID-19.

For students who return home, room and board fees for spring term will be proportionately reduced to reflect the time they are off campus.  In this email you will find important information regarding vacating your on-campus residence.

Petitioning to Stay on Campus

We realize that returning home is not possible for some of our students. Accordingly, international students or others whose circumstances prevent them from traveling home (or to another safe, non-campus location) can petition to stay on campus by completing this form no later than Sunday, March 15, at 10:00 p.m. Students who are authorized to remain on campus will still take their classes remotely. Students residing on campus will pay their regular room and board fees, and essential services such as health, counseling, and campus dining facilities will continue to be available to them.

Room Checks

In order to ensure that campus housing has been vacated, Campus Life Staff and Resident Assistants will complete a walk through of all individuals rooms on Thursday, March 19 between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

You do not need to turn in your residence hall keys. Hold on to them for your return in May.  However, exterior doors cores will be changed on Friday, March 20, and students who are approved to stay on campus will be issued a temporary exterior door replacement key.

You are not expected to completely move out of your room. However, if items are left in your room and we need to consolidate residents (this is unlikely, but possible) we may need to pack up and move your items. For this reason we are offering on-campus storage for those who wish to move out completely. Storage will be available in Conger-Neal Basement, Tompkins Basement, and Williston Basement during the times below. You do not need to make an appointment.

  • Saturday, March 14 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 15 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • Monday, March 16  9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 17  1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 18 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

If the times listed will not work for your travel schedule, please contact Campus Life at (309) 341-7527 or

  • Each student is permitted to store up to five medium boxes; if the box cannot be carried by one person of average strength then it is too large.
  • Each box must be labeled with your Full Name, Knox ID, and storage date.
  • Each student storing items must sign an online storage contract, which will be provided by a staff member at the storage location.

Airport Shuttles

Student Development will provide transportation to the Peoria and Quad Cities airports on Tuesday, March 17, Wednesday, March 18, and Thursday, March 19. If you need transportation, please complete this form. If you already have a shuttle reservation for Monday, March 16, those shuttles will run as planned.

As Campus Life staff, we truly value the residential experience as a core aspect of your Knox education. We will be sorry to see so many of you depart campus. We will be working closely with our Resident Assistants to do everything possible to maintain the communities you have all created since fall term, so expect to hear from them!

Please let us know if you have any questions, and please keep in touch with us from off campus. We will continue to share information as it becomes available.

Take care and stay well,

Eleanor Kahn
