The graduating class will be split into two Commencement exercises—a morning session at 10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session at 3:00 p.m.. This will enable the class to safely bring three guests observing appropriate safety protocols to campus.
The Commencement ceremonies will take place on the South Lawn of Old Main. The ceremonies are held outdoors, rain or shine. If we encounter severe weather (thunderstorms with lightning or a tornado), we will delay until the weather passes. If severe weather is anticipated, we will postpone to Sunday, June 6, our inclement weather date, no less than 48 hours in advance.
Students were provided the opportunity to indicate a preference for the morning or afternoon ceremony. The morning Commencement begins at 10:00 a.m., lasting approximately 1.5 hours.
Commencement is a ticketed event, but guest seating is not assigned. Entrances to the ceremony area will open no earlier than 1.5 hours before the Commencement start times. We also ask that guests leave within an hour post ceremony, so we may prepare for the next event.
Graduates participating in the Commencement ceremony are required to wear a cap & gown.
Potential graduates were provided the opportunity to indicate their gown size. The cost of these items is included in the graduate fee. Caps and gowns will be distributed to graduates at Commencement Rehearsal on June 3.
General parking is available in the lots around campus, including those lots on Berrien (near SMC), Cedar (near Williston Hall), Prairie (near the Fieldhouse), and Academy Streets as well as indicated street parking areas. Additional parking is available in the Knox County Courthouse lot at the corner of South & Cherry Streets. Please refer to the campus map for parking lot locations.
The turnaround at Alumni Hall is not open for parking, but you may use this driveway to drop off guests closer to the ceremony location.
The Cherry Street parking lot is reserved for accessible parking. There will be two golf carts at this location to assist guests in getting from their cars to the ceremony venue.
The ceremony will be displayed on large LED screens that will also have closed captioning.
Accessible parking will be available in the Cherry Street parking lot, at Cherry and Berrien Streets. Golf carts will be available to assist guests to the ceremony venue.
There will be handicap-accessible seating available in the perimeter sections. Commencement volunteers will be available to help accommodate you and your guests.
A professional photographer will capture three photos - one as they approach the stage, one when they receive their diploma, and a portrait after leaving the stage. Purchase of these photos will be available through the vendor, GradImages. Photos of your graduate receiving their diploma will be available for purchase from GradImages. Graduates will receive a proof in the mail shortly after the ceremony. Knox is providing each graduate the option to choose one of these images for free.
We ask that guests refrain from taking their own photos of graduates crossing the stage. Please stay in the guest section for the duration of the ceremony.
After the ceremony, the international flags and the class banner will remain in place for you to capture a candid of your graduate. We ask that graduates and guests be considerate of others, maintaining a 6’ distance from other guests.
Due to occupancy limitations, we are not able to host any vendor tables this year.
We will provide boxed water for guests and the Gizmo will be open, but with limited occupancy.
There is no formal dress code. Graduates are required to wear and cap & gown.
Commencement memorabilia—from class rings, diploma frames, etc.—are available for purchase online through Oak Hall Graduation Services.
A DVD recording of each Commencement ceremony will be available for purchase through our vendor, Delack Media Group. Five dollars from each sale will be donated back to Knox College.
The class of 2021 and their guests will likely notice the many ways Knox honors its commitment to sustainability throughout Commencement weekend. The following are a few of the sustainable features of Knox's Commencement:
