The basic things you need to know about community engagement before you get involved, which you probably will.

  1. Our students contribute tens of thousands of service every year, through established partnerships and special programs, including our Day of Service, the Knox Prairie Community Kitchen, and the groundbreaking KnoxCorps program, which places current students and recent graduates in long-term positions with local and regional organizations.
  2. Our Kleine Center for Community Service recently received the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll award. That's not why we do the work, but it's nice to be recognized.
  3. "Community engagement" often means "being a neighbor": joining the local food co-op or a community chorus, helping to plan a civic event or simply being downtown when other people are downtown, meeting and talking and sharing stories.
  4. Our students (and alumni) take the spirit of community engagement with them wherever they go-to internships and study abroad programs, to jobs and public service opportunities. In ways large and small, in communities around the world (starting with ours, right here), we move the world forward. That's why we do the work.
