The multipurpose Knox College formally dedicated the E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center on February 17, 2006. The $2.4-million, state-of-the-art facility opened for student use on January 24, 2006.

The center features 21 "selectorized" weight training stations in a 2,785-square-foot cardio-exercise area, an increase of 150 percent over the space formerly located in Memorial Gymnasium. The 2,860 square-foot free-weight training area is 50 percent larger than the prior space. The fitness center also includes an 800-square-foot fitness studio and two locker rooms, with a total of 140 lockers.

ABLE was founded.

Open to students of all races, uniting them around common concerns regarding the Black experience

The E. & L. Andrew Fitness Center is named in honor of Knox College Trustee Laurel Andrew and her parents, Edward and Edith Andrew, of Orland Park, Illinois, and their family members, who provided the lead gift. The project also received gifts from approximately 50 additional individual donors. Construction on the fitness center began in June 2005, with a formal groundbreaking in July 2005.Features include:

  • Two levels totaling 13,000 square feet;
  • A mezzanine level with cardio and selectorized exercise machines, stretching area and fitness studio;
  • A lower level with Reflex and Hammer Strength free weight systems and locker rooms;
  • A wall of windows, 80-feet long and 20-feet high, spanning the mezzanine level, providing bright, natural light to both levels and great views of the campus from the mezzanine;
  • State-of-the-art video and audio systems throughout the facility, including a series of large wide-screen, flat-panel televisions with a multi-channel, radio-transmitted audio system.
