The Philosophy Department presents:

"Existential Ethics as Applied Ethics: When is the problem of evil or racism a morally impermissible act?" by Dr. Nathalie Nya (John Carroll University).

Dr. Nya describes her lecture as follows:

The paper explains the problem of racism from the perspective of Existential Ethics. The author uses Existential Ethics as a form of Applied Ethics. The reason why the author opts to study Existential Ethics as a form of Applied Ethics, is because unlike any other form of Ethics, such as Deontology or Virtue Ethics, Existential Ethics is a form of Ethics that does not assume an essential subject with given sets of required characteristics that enables the person to be ethical, and it is not based on any required moral principles, such that it cannot be assumed that ontological freedom is the necessary requirement for forming an ethical judgement. With Existential Ethics we can examine racists' acts by alluding to the contemporary situations instead of the characteristics of these people. From the perspective of Existential Ethics as Applied Ethics, racist acts are not just a White problem, but the problem in context to the situation of our contemporary democratic society, which ethically implicate all of us, regardless our race(s) or ethnicities.
