With 13 million workers, the restaurant industry is one of the largest and fastest growing sectors of the U.S. economy. It is also the lowest paying. That’s because the minimum wage for tipped workers in the US is still just $2.13 an hour.

This wage is a literal legacy of slavery, as the first tipped workers were former slaves. Today, seventy percent of tipped workers in America are women, where they suffer from three times the poverty rate of the rest of America. Worst of all, tipped workers suffer from the highest rates of sexual harassment of any industry, because their wages are so low they must tolerate inappropriate customer behavior to feed their families in tips.

Come listen to nationally-renowned activist Saru Jayaraman as she details the fight to bring fairer wages to the restaurant industry and why it matters to all American workers.

The talk will start at 7:00 PM and will last for approximately an hour. Q&A session will follow shortly after. Follow the event on Facebook for updates!
