Join our hosts, Kamana'okekai & Meridian Lattig, along with Intercultural Life for a lei making demonstration and workshop in honor of Lei Day.
A lei is a flower garland made by hand as a symbol of welcome and honor. Lei making is a historied Hawai'ian tradition that embodies the spirit of Aloha - Hawai'ian ideals of generosity, community, and inclusiveness. But did you know that there is an entire day in Hawai'i dedicated to making and gifting lei?
Lei Day started in 1928 and has been celebrated every May 1st for 4 generations. Lei day is celebrated with the making and gifting of lei, food, music, dance, friendly competition, pagents, and so much more.
Please join us in amplifying the voices and celebrating the cultural traditions of Hawai'ian students for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month. This event will include a lei making demonstration, education about the history of making lei, and participants that RSVP using the form below will be able to make their own lei and join us for a dinner - Hawai'ian food cooked by our students to share with the Knox community.
We invite our Asian and Pacific Islander students to come ready to show off and show out -- celebrating lei day in your cultural attire.
Please RSVP to be able to participate in this event -- spots are limited. If you do not make the cut for lei making you are still welcome to come watch the demonstration and celebrate with us.
