Maury Klein '60 Uses History to Explain Current Events

Historian returns to Knox College to present "Learning from the Lessons of the Past" as part of Knox's Professional in Residence Series.

Ten individuals and one team were honored for service and athletic achievement at Homecoming 2017:

  • Three received the FYC Scroll of Honor, recognizing lifetime achievements and service to their community, society, or humanity: Bob Callecod '61, Judie Elifson Hoffman '61, and Jo Ann Ooiman Robinson '64.
  • Recognized with Knox Service Awards for volunteer service to the College were Maurice Harris '08, Nalini Prakash Hart '03, Joyce Hertko '82, and Gary Moses '65. 
  • Inducted into the Knox-Lombard Athletic Hall of Fame were the 1978 men's soccer team, Frank Adams, Kyle Anderson '93, and David Ladner '69.

Knox Welcomes Cuban Musician Jesús Fernández as Artist in Residence

The master of Cuban stringed instruments visits classrooms, shares Cuban culture, and performs throughout campus and in Galesburg.

Gregory Gilbert, professor of art and art history, presented a talk at the 4th Biennial Midwest Women Artists Symposium at Bradley University. The symposium was sponsored by the Illinois Women Artists Project and the Art and Art History Department. Gilbert's talk was titled "Clare Smith and the Influence of Atelier 17 on Printmaking in Illinois." Knox College maintains an extensive collection of Smith's personal archives and artworks.

Assistant Professor of Anthropology-Sociology Teresa Gonzales' article, "Two sides of the same coin: The New Communities' Program, grassroots organizations, and leadership development in two Chicago neighborhoods", was recently published in the Journal of Urban Affairs. Gonzales recently presented research on organizational trust and local development at the Sociology of Development Conference at Wayne State University. The presentation was titled: Trust as a "Mask for Domination": Organizational (Mis)Trust, Community Development, and the New Communities' Program.

Tim Kasser, professor of psychology, gave an invited webinar via the International Society for Quality of Life Studies. The webinar is "How an Activist Researcher Became a Cartoon Character: HyperCapitalism, Values, & Quality of Life." The talk examines how cartoons have a unique ability to demonstrate complex values through their visual format.

Professor of Art Lynette Lombard has had a busy October. John Goodrich of Painting Perceptions reviewed her work in the collaborative exhibit Crossroads. She was also featured at College of William and Mary as part of the Midwest Paint Group show, and still more of her selections will be displayed at Wright State University from January 16 through February 25. Lombard also gave a talk on her work at the Riverfront Museum in Peoria, IL, as part of Emergence: The National Arts of Central Illinois.
