Opting out

Q: Can I opt out of the directory and not be part of the alumni community?

A: Yes, you can complete an opt-out form to let us know that you do not want to be part of the KNect Alumni Directory. When you opt out, you will not show up in the directory.

Q: Why not opt in?

A: Opt in works for communities with a specific focus or interest—for example, opt in to mentor, volunteer, or engage with alumni who have the same interests as you. Alumni communities, such as alumni directories, don't work without a robust set of engagers, so all such software platforms today are opt out.

Q: What should I do if I try to hide my profile or make updates within the directory and the directory crashes or server error appears?

A: If you would like your profile to be made invisible, please email If you have updates to your information, please email We will be glad to assist you with this.

More than likely, these errors will occur with the Android version more often than an iPhone. Evertrue will release a new version of the Android application that we believe will address issues such as login problems, crashes, and server errors.


Q: Who can download the Knox KNect directory?

A: Anyone can download the directory, but it is useless to anyone until Knox approves that the user is indeed a member of the Knox alumni database. Each request must match a current email address. If it doesn't match, it is then examined by a member of the Alumni Relations staff to approve or not approve. Only members of the Knox alumni community, senior and junior Knox students, and a few staff are members of the community.

Q: What personal information is available for other alumni to see?

A:​ KNect includes your name, class year/major, employment information, city/state/zip, and email, as well as clubs/organizations or athletic involvement. Only you can view your phone number(s) in your profile. Phone numbers cannot be viewed by other alumni. In the alumni nearby feature, map pins point to the center of the zip codes, not actual addresses. The information in the alumni mobile app is comprised of information from the college database.
Once you log in you will also have the chance to sync your profile with LinkedIn, and make any other necessary updates.

Q: What will you do with my data?

A: Knox College will not sell your data. We do not provide it to a third party for any purpose that is not directly related to Knox College. In a situation where we do provide alumni data to a third party, it is only when we have a contract defining that use of our data is limited to projects related to Knox, and any data must be returned or destroyed at the end of the contract. Before signing a contract with a third party, we review their security systems and practices so they are consistent with our standards. View the Evertrue Privacy Policy.

Q: How do I make my profile invisible?

A: Use the gear icon in the top right corner of the menu page. Select "OFF" next to "Hide my information." Selecting "OFF" completely hides your information from any search or view within the directory. When this setting is set to "OFF," you are the only person who will see your information.

In the desktop version, click on the circle in the upper right corner with your picture or initials, just right of the News and Social Button. Once the menu drops down, click on Manage Settings. Once the Setting box appears, click on Profile Visibility and then select Make my profile only visible to me.  

Q: How do I customize my privacy settings or update my contact information?

A: Unless otherwise indicated, your primary contact information will be visible in the directory; this includes your name, city/state/zip, class year/major, email, and employment information.

If you wish to customize your settings so that particular information will not be visible to other constituents, go to your profile and click the "Suggest an Update" button located at the bottom of your screen. You will then be given a free text box to submit any updates and/or privacy requests you wish to make. Please allow some time for your request to be processed as this is not an instant change.

To update your information in the desktop version, click on the circle in the upper right corner with your picture or initials, just right of the News and Social Button. Once the menu drops down, click on Manage Settings. Once the Setting box appears, click on Suggest Updates to Profile.

Logging in/out

Q: How do I log in to the Knox KNect community?

A: You can log in with your LinkedIn account or your e-mail address. If using an email and password, you will need to verify your email. Once we have verified that you are a member of the Knox community, you will receive a confirmation email. Simply click on the confirmation link and return to the directory to proceed. If you are not receiving a confirmation link, please email and inform them that you aren’t receiving the confirmation.

Q: Which of my email addresses do I use to sign up for the directory?

A: Please sign up using your primary email. This will ensure you receive all necessary communications regarding the directory and login process.

Q: Can I log in with more than one email address?

A: Only one email address can be used to access the community. You will set a unique username/email and password to access our community, whether you create a new set of credentials or log in using LinkedIn.

Q: What does it mean when my information is under review?

A: If the email address you use to log in is not found in our database, we will have an administrator confirm your identity using the information you provided. After your identity is confirmed, you will immediately gain access to the Knox KNect community.

Q: How do I log out of the directory?

A: To log out, click settings, which is the gear icon located in the top right corner of the menu page, and select "Log Out."

To log out of the desktop version, click on the circle in the upper right corner with your picture or initials, just right of the News and Social Button. Once the menu drops down, click on Log Out.

Q: What if I attended several schools that use the directory? Can I join more than one college/university community? How do I switch between them?

A: EverTrue (the administrator of the directory) gives you the ability to be part of any and all communities that you belong to, but also switch between communities quickly. You can use the same credentials for all communities you belong to as long as each organization has that email in their database. First, log out of the Knox KNect directory, then visit Type in the name of the school(s) in your network or click on the down arrow to select the institution.

Technical Difficulty/Navigation/Settings

Q: I am using an android device. Why am I receiving a server error message when I attempt to hide my profile or make updates to my profile?

A: Evertrue will soon release a new version of the android application that we believe will address all of the issues you are experiencing in the past including login problems, crashes, and server errors. Please email

Q: What happens if I log in to the mobile app hide or update my information and receive errors when doing so or if the directory shuts down?

A: Please email technical concerns to The support team will help address any technical difficulties you experience. You can also email updates to or click on the opt-out form and select the information you wish to hide.

Q: How do I navigate to settings in the directory?

A: In the directory, you can access settings by clicking on the gear icon in the top right corner of the menu page. In the desktop version, you can access your settings by clicking on the circle in the upper right corner with your picture or initials, just right of the News and Social Button. Once the menu drops down, click on Manage Settings.

Utilizing Linkedin or Other Social Media Sites

Q: How do I connect my LinkedIn?

A: You can log in to the directory using your LinkedIn credentials, which will automatically connect your LinkedIn account to your profile. However, if you choose to authenticate using a different email and password, you can still connect your LinkedIn account via settings. Simply click the gear icon at the top right of the menu page and enable LinkedIn.

If your Linkedin profile picture still does not appear, please email our technical support team at and inform them that your Linkedin profile picture is not appearing. They will contact you and help to manually integrate your Linkedin with your directory profile.

For the desktop version, you will first want to access your settings by clicking on the circle in the upper right corner with your picture or initials, just right of the News and Social Button. Once the menu drops down, click on Manage Settings. When the settings box appears, click on Social Networks to connect your LinkedIn profile.

Q: Why should I connect my LinkedIn account?

A: The directory allows you to connect and network with other people using LinkedIn. Being connected via LinkedIn also enhances some of the directory's built-in features, including "Professionals to Know" and other filtering options.

Once you are connected via LinkedIn, you can view information that people have included in their LinkedIn profiles along with the number of connections you have in common. Frequently, alumni keep their employment more current on their LinkedIn profile than they do in the Knox database. Anything marked as private in LinkedIn remains private. Don't forget to list Knox College in the education section of your LinkedIn profile, and be sure to join the Knox College Alumni LinkedIn group.

Q: Can I access Knox College's social media apps directly from the directory?

A: We have included links to Facebook, Twitter, and other alumni links in the directory for your convenience. Click on the News and Social page and browse around. Use the down arrow located at the top right corner of the screen to navigate to other linked pages.

Q: Why did you go with a third party vendor?

A: After months of research, including looking at more than 15 networking platforms, we decided to work with EverTrue, which hosts networking apps at close to 200 colleges, universities, and other schools. We previewed the app with more than 100 alumni volunteers and a few current students. The EverTrue app had been in operation for almost five years and the company is constantly refining and improving the product.

Q: Isn't EverTrue a fundraising company?

A: They do also have a platform for fundraisers to use. It is a different platform from our directory and we are not a client of their platform. We have no intention of using the KNect Alumni Directory for fundraising purposes. It is meant to be a way for Knox alumni to stay more closely connected with each other.

Searching for alumni

Q: How do I search for people using the directory?

A: To perform a search in the directory, click the magnifying glass located in the top right corner of the directory screen. You can search by name and/or filter by several other useful fields like class year, region, athletics affiliation, clubs, and major. Be sure to click "RESET ALL" when you conduct a new search. When using the desktop version, click on All Filters at the top of the screen to access the search categories. Be sure to click Reset All Filters when you want to do a new search.

Q: How do I search for people nearby?

A: Click on the Nearby tab in the sidebar navigation. A map will appear with pushpins indicating people in your area. The map pins point to the center of the zip codes, not actual addresses. To view a full profile, click the round information button to the right of a name. You may also click the List icon next to the map to view a list of people nearby.

Are you traveling or looking to meet up with Knox alumni in other cities? You can search for users across the globe by entering any zip code, city, state, or country in the search bar at the top of the screen. The map feature will navigate to that location and show you alumni listed in that part of the world.

To search alumni by name in the map feature, click on the magnifying glass/search icon at the top right of the map. You can also use the magnifying glass for more advanced search and filter options.

In the desktop version, you will automatically be in the map/nearby view when you open the program. Your computer may ask if you want to set the location as your default for the nearby search. There is a search bar located within the map. In this box, you can type the location of where you would like to search alumni. Once you begin typing the location, this search box should begin auto-filling locations for you to select from. If you experience challenges with this, feel free to email or We’re here to assist.

Q: Who are my Classmates?

A: KNect's Classmates feature enables you to search and see alumni from your class year or any range of class years. In the desktop version, there is a drop-down box on the top right of your screen titled Find Alumni. Based on the class year in your Knox record, the third option will be Class of 1837, for example. When you click on this the class year search will only select your class year. The other option you have is to then select Reset All Filters, then click All Filters, and then click the drop-down arrow under Any Grad Year in the upper left corner. This will then display two clear boxes to type your search ranges. For example, 1837-1841. Then, click Apply Filters.

Q: Who are my Professionals to Know?

A: If connected to LinkedIn, KNect will use your self-identified LinkedIn industry to pull a list of other alumni in that profession. This is a great way to network within your chosen field.

Q: Are deceased alumni included in the KNect directory? If not, how can I access deceased information if I am connecting with classmates for reunion or class event purposes?
