This is a unique opportunity to experience an immersion in the academic and cultural life of Barcelona. Through a relationship established in 1968, students on the program study in the downtown campus of the Universitat de Barcelona, the second largest university in Spain. As a Knox program student, you may take university courses with native Spanish speakers or Knox Program courses taught by University professors experienced in teaching students at the intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency.
The Knox program in Barcelona offers students the chance to be typical college students, Barcelona style, for one, two, or three trimesters. Ancient and modern history, art and architecture mix with a bustling metropolitan scene, beautiful beaches and possibilities for adventures throughout Europe. Barcelona is only a two-hour flight from Paris, London, Rome, Lisbon and Morocco.
Educational excursions to historical sites throughout Spain and life with a Spanish host family enrich your connection to Barcelona's vibrant cultural history and way of life. All students live in the homes of Spanish families in Barcelona. The program includes a two-week trip through southern Spain during winter break as well as other shorter educational field trips.
Even when you are not studying at the University, Barcelona offers a plethora of learning opportunities: it is the urban center of Catalan culture, and you will hear both Catalan and Spanish in the city. Learn directly from Catalans about their perceptions of the pros and cons of Catalonian independence, watch grassroots democracy movements unfold, and see how immigration has shaped Catalan identity.
