Established in 1966, this Knox program is the oldest American program in Besançon, a beautiful and historic city in eastern France. Students live and study at the Université de Besançon in the Jura Mountains of France's Franche-Comté region, enjoying the same vistas as famous inhabitants, such as Victor Hugo and Louis Pasteur. The program is located near both Germany and Switzerland, and the city offers a rich array of cultural opportunities. The location also provides wonderful opportunities to explore Strasbourg, the official seat of the European Parliament, as well as ski resorts and Paris (slightly less than three hours away by bullet train).
Students are enrolled in the Centre de Linguistique Appliquee (CLA), a world-renowned institute for teaching the French language. Students who spend two or more Knox terms in the program may take classes for credit at the University of Besancon.
An initial, one-month home-stay with a French family and university dormitory accommodations thereafter provide a unique opportunity to participate in both French home culture and university life. Educational excursions to Paris and regions surrounding Besançon enable students to sample the charms of the region: vineyards, wine cellars, picturesque villages, and cathedrals and castles dating from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Non-Knox students are welcome to apply for admission to this program.
