The ACM Brazil Semester Exchange program has a "Liberal Arts and Sciences" option and an "Environmental Studies" option. Students take classes at the highly-regarded Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and become immersed in Brazilian culture. At UFJF, students study Portuguese, beginning with a two-week intensive language and orientation course when they arrive, and choose two or three classes among courses in the sciences, arts, humanities, and social sciences for the semester, in addition to continued study of Portuguese.

This program option is available to students from any academic major, and is ideal for students interested in Latin America. Students are required to have had formal study of a foreign language - particularly Portuguese or another Romance language - and should havea a strong motivation to develop advanced level proficiency in Portuguese.

Juiz de Fora, the site of the program, is a pleasant city located two hours by bus north of Rio de Janeiro in the low mountains of the state of Minas Gerais. Students will have the option of living with a Brazilian host family or in an apartment with Brazilian students. Advanced level of Spanish is a prerequisite.

Credits: 4.5. Period: one semester (fall, spring).
Program advisor: Professor Pedro Teixeira.
