Each spring, Knox College is host to Sectional competition for the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Academic Challenge (WYSE).  Students from area high schools compete on written exams in the sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering, and English.  Awards are presented to top-performing teams and individuals, who then advance to State-level competition.  We congratulate WYSE competitors advancing from Regional competitions and look forward to your participation in this year's Sectional contest.

Academic Challenge Scholarship

Knox College is proud to offer scholarships toward the cost of tuition at Knox to recognize students who excel in WYSE Sectional competitions.

Students who finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in overall competition (among all competitors, across all divisions) at the Knox College Sectional will be eligible for a $2,000 annual award for each qualifying examination.

Participants in a WYSE Sectional competition held on any campus who qualify to advance to State competition are eligible for a $1,000 annual award for each qualifying examination.

Competitors can earn an award in each of two subject areas in each year of WYSE competition. To receive your WYSE Scholarship, you must complete an application for first-year admission and notify us of your eligibility for a WYSE Scholarship in your application.

Test Location

The Sharvy G. Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center is at the corner of South and Academy streets. Parking for vans and cars is available in the two parking lots adjacent to the Umbeck Center, and on Academy, Berrien, and West Streets (including in areas marked "permit only"). Buses are recommended to park either on Academy Street or in the lot on the southeast corner of campus opposite the Fleming Field House


There will be a lunch break from 11:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students and coaches can enjoy one of the many restaurants available in Galesburg. The Hard Knox cafeteria on campus will not be open for lunch this year.


Advancing teams should register online by 5:00 p.m. on March 3, at the WYSE website.  Your password for the Sectional registration site will be the same password you created for your Regional registration.

Access to the registration site will be restricted after March 3. If you need to make roster changes after this date, please e-mail  For emergency changes on the morning of competition, please use the contact information provided in your advancement packet. Due to the addition of a large number of teams this year, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to make changes the morning of the competition. Your cooperation in limiting changes on competition day is greatly appreciated and will help us to begin exam administration on schedule.
